Former ISL Champions Jamshedpur FC withdraw from ISL from 2026-27 season onwards

The only franchise in the Indian Super League to have its own stadium and arguably some of the best facilities and infrastructure in the country, Jamshedpur FC are set to discontinue playing in the Indian Super League from the 2026-27 season onwards.

Hailing from India’s first planned industrial city, Jamshedpur, where the famous Tata Football Academy produced some of the biggest names in the history of Indian football, including the likes of Arjuna Awardee Subrata Paul, former Bengaluru FC coach Renedy Singh to Indian internationals like Robin and Udanta Singh.

The news spread like wildfire across the Indian football fraternity. From some of the big names in Indian football, players, to fans posting on social media to save Jamshedpur FC.

This is a massive loss for Indian football when an international conglomerate like the Tatas decides to divest from Indian football. Ahead of their game against SC Delhi, fans took to the stadium in large numbers, raising tifos and banners to grab the attention of top Tata authorities.

Fans raise tifos to draw TATA’s attention

It was not a bright sunny day in the capital city of Ranchi, which is at the crossroads of thousands of students protesting and JFC fans coming in large numbers with banners and tifos in the Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Ranchi.

Some tifos read, “Save TATA’s legacy – Jamshedpur FC, TATA backs off when Indian football needs them the most.” There were other slogans like “We hope that Jamshedpur FC comes back to the ISL” and “Hear the voice of the fans”

It was a rainy day in Ranchi and thunderstorms and heavy rains delayed the start of the game against SC Delhi. Despite Sanan scoring the opening goal, the game did not end in Jamshedpur FC’s favour as the hosts succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to SC Delhi.

Jamshedpur records one of highest average attendance in ISL

Unlike other venues that sees low to almost no turnover of fans, the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur is famous for registering one of the highest average attendance in the competition.

The 23,000-capacity stadium is house full in almost every matchday. Despite the Red Miners making it to the ISL semi-finals only twice in almost a decade, the fans have stuck with the club through thick and thin, and they indeed deserve better.

Even in a difficult season like the 2025-26 season, which got delayed due to MRA expiration, the Furnace hosted one of the highest home games for any team, and the fans did not fail to turn up for the team, even on festive occasions and even when the team was not at it’s best.
