Former East Bengal captain, Lalrindika Ralte had announced his retirement from professional football. The 29-year-old, who last played for Real Kashmir FC in the I-League made known his decision on February 12 (Saturday).
Hailing from Mizoram, he had started his football journey at the IFA academy back in 2004. After a couple of years there, Lalrindika Ralte signed his first professional contract with heavyweights Churchill Brothers. The experienced midfielder played for the Goan outfit between 2009 and 2012. After this stint, "Dika" moved to East Bengal, where he became an instant fan-favourite.
In a recent candid conversation, Khel Now spoke to Lalrindika Ralte about his illustrious career. “When I was in the IFA academy, we were divided into two groups. One was supporters of East Bengal and the other was Mohun Bagan fans. Ever since those days, I wished to play for East Bengal at some point in my career.”
“I had received a lot of offers from clubs like Dempo, Salgaocar and even Mohun Bagan. At that time, Robert (Lalthlamuana) was playing for East Bengal. I spoke to him and he convinced me to make the move,” Ralte said on what influenced his move to the Red and Gold.
He joined Mumbai City in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League in 2014. Apart from MCFC, the former Indian international also represented ATK and NortheEast United in short stints.

“I don’t think I can choose between I-league and ISL. The former is certainly a difficult league to play in. However, the prevalence of good quality foreigners in ISL makes it easier for us to play. Moreover, the facilities in the Indian Super League are much better,” the player commented on the difference between both competitions.

After a career which has spanned almost 17 years across prestigious clubs, the player has decided to call it quits. “It was a very difficult decision for me. The COVID-19 pandemic played a huge role as well, as it made it compulsory for us to stay in a bio-bubble, which was very tough. I have two small children as well, so considering all the factors, I have come to this moment in my life,” the Zinedine Zidane fan said about his reasons for retiring at such an age.
After retirement, Ralte has dreams of opening a football academy in his hometown and later moving into coaching. In his words, “I just don’t want to leave football.”
