The Mariners have the upper hand in the ISL against their arch-rivals.
The stage is getting set for one of the world’s oldest football rivalries between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan to kick-off again. The century-old Kolkata Derby is set to happen again, at its usual venue, the iconic Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan. The game is scheduled for October 19, from 7:30 p.m. This will be the fifth fixture for both the Kolkata clubs in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25.
No matter which team emerged victorious in the countless games between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, one thing has always been witnessed, and it’s closely fought fixtures with intense drama. This time too something similar will be eyed for by the thousands of spectators inside the stadium, and the crores outside.
Technically the “hosts” East Bengal, are having a tough time in the league. The Red & Gold brigade are the only side in ISL 2024-25 to lose all their games as of now, a picture much different from what was dreamt after a strong transfer window. The club is at the tail-end of the table and will be eyeing nothing but a win against the arch-rivals to boost their morale and rise to an upper spot.
“Away-side” Mohun Bagan are at spot four, following their last game win against rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club. The Mariners struggled initially but now look strong and progressive. The side has two wins, a draw and a loss, and will be eyeing a win here, to not only bully their struggling arch-rivals but also to protect the goal of defending the ISL Shield they won last year.
Having said that, East Bengal should not be considered ‘underdogs.’ In a Kolkata Derby, it’s a battle for every inch, and only the team that outlasts the other in front of thousands of fans will emerge victorious.
