FC Goa have an opportunity to show their mettle on the Asian stage once again as they play Al Seeb in the AFC Champions League 2 preliminary round on August 13.

It will be a home fixture for the Gaurs, and they will play in front of their home crowd at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Fatorda). This will mark FC Goa’s Asian comeback after four years. Last time they represented India in Asia in 2021.

The match is expected to be a thrilling contest as both clubs have been in impressive form. FC Goa and Al Seeb capped off their last season with an extraordinary run in cup competitions. However, those campaigns had contrasting ends for both clubs.

The Gaurs capped off their Kalinga Super Cup campaign by clinching the title as they defeated Jamshedpur FC in the final. But Al Seeb had to make do with the runners-up tag, as they could not trounce Al Shabab in the Oman Super Cup finale.

This ACL 2 preliminary round fixture will be a huge opportunity for both Manolo Marquez and Nikola Djurovic to build on the results they achieved last season. After being relieved of the Indian national team job, Marquez will be focused on making the most of this opportunity and redeeming himself after a disappointing tenure with India.

FC Goa bolstered with new signings

The Gaurshave been busy this summer bringing reinforcements to their squad ahead of their ACL 2 assignment. They have made some exciting signings that include some known and new faces. Sandesh Jhingan is likely to have a new partner in defence with the Spaniard Pol Moreno coming. The experienced centre-back from Barcelona is expected to be a great addition to the squad.

Not just in defence, but the Kalinga Super champions have also strengthened other departments. Another Spaniard, David Timor, has been signed to boost the team’s potential in the midfield. A bright Indian midfield prospect, Harsh Patre, has also travelled to Goa from Bengaluru to don the orange jersey.

Whereas in the attack, there is an introduction of a familiar face in Javier Siverio. He last played for Jamshedpur FC in the Super Cup before switching sides ahead of ACL 2.
