2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: India vs Kuwait – Build-up

India are in desperate need of a win when they host Kuwait in their next 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers’ second-round clash on Thursday (June 6). The Blue Tigers will hope to end their miserable losing run in 2024 at the Salt Lake Stadium in what will also be Sunil Chhetri’s final match for the national team.

India need to win to keep their hopes of progressing into the third round of qualifying alive and well, while also ending this awful rut that has set in since that win over Kuwait in November 2023.

The visitors, however, will aim to ruin Chhetri’s final hurrah by producing a sturdy and efficient performance to pile on the Blue Tigers’ misery in their yard.

Kuwait were stunned by India in their yard in the first match of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They haven’t forgotten about it and will be gunning for revenge this time around.

The Blue Wave have a nicely balanced squad that has quite a few experienced players and a bunch of talented young players too. They will look to produce a significantly better performance than they did in the reverse fixture.

Kuwait are also pushing for a place in the third round of qualifying in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and realize how important defeating India can be.

It can not only get them out of the last position in Group A but also place them in pole position for getting past the second round knowing that India faces Qatar afterwards. However, another defeat to India will end the Blue Wave’s ambitions of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
