Gurpreet Singh Sandhu recalls SAFF Championship heroics ahead of India vs Panama clash

Panama will face the Blue Tigers on 25th September

Three years later, the divine sound of Kanteerava still lingers for the Indian National Football Team.

Not just the roar that filled the stadium that night, but the moment the voices from the stands seemed to spill onto the pitch.

For a goalkeeper standing alone in his box, with thousands behind him chanting in unison, it remains a scene frozen in time — a crescendo that seemed to vibrate through the grass beneath his studs, the final of the SAFF Championship 2023.

For Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the emotional resonance of that night in the Blue Tigers’ jersey hasn’t been matched.

“To see the fans and the players come together, singing Vande Mataram as one, has to be one of the best moments of my national team career,” he said.

Kanteerava has long been Guardian Gurpreet’s sanctuary. It is where he first made the Indian starting line-up, and where years of memories have been woven with the Bengaluru FC faithful.

On that same turf, the stadium witnessed one of his most memorable moments in the flash of national colours.

Sandhu rose to the occasion again, mirroring his save against Lebanon in the semi-final — denying Kuwaiti captain Khaled Hajiah from twelve yards out to win a record-extending SAFF title for India.

“Playing in front of the Indian football fans is always an honour”: Sandhu

Now, on September 25, he is set to walk onto the same grass once again, this time with Panama awaiting on the other side.

For a custodian who has spent over nine years calling Kanteerava home, his boots have dug into the same ground night after night as he stood guard for his club and country. But here, playing in national colours feels more personal, more familiar.

“Playing in front of the Indian football fans is always an honour, but doing it at home in Bengaluru just elevates the feeling,” Sandhu said.

“As a goalkeeper, you want to keep your home safe and give everything you have on the pitch against whoever we face.”

The 34-year-old has seen Kanteerava at its most beautiful and powerful before. There is a certain alchemy to it when the stands are packed to the brim.

Sandhu has stood at the heart of it all, and three years on, as he prepares to don the India jersey once again at the fortress, he wants to recapture that same spirit.

“I just want to make sure that all of us give our hundred per cent on the pitch and make the stadium feel like what we all know it is – the Fortress.”

And if Kanteerava is a fortress, its greatest strength has always been the thousands who fill the stands, amplifying its pulse.

"We need to be prepared mentally and physically", India captain Gupreet Singh Sandhu warns of complacency ahead of Bangladesh clash

The chants, the cheers, and the chorus all build toward the moment when the line between the 12th man and the pitch simply melts away. Even now, that fourth night of July 2023 beneath the Bengaluru floodlights remains etched into his memory, as fresh as ever.

And as India’s return to Bengaluru draws near, Sandhu hopes the Kanteerava magic is summoned once again.

“The fans, I cannot wait to see them flood the stadium in blue,” he said.

“The fans are why Kanteerava has hosted some of the best national team matches in the past decade, and they can make magic happen. I just hope that they show up in numbers and make us push to go win.”

When will India face Panama?

India will face Panama on 25 September at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.

What is Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s favourite memory at Kanteerava?

One of his most memorable moments came during the 2023 SAFF Championship final, when India defeated Kuwait on penalties. Sandhu saved Kuwait captain Khaled Hajiah’s penalty to help India retain the title.
