I-League 2023-24: Top five most impactful players

Several Indian players created a powerful impact in the I-League 2023-24 season.

The level of I-League is undoubtedly increasing day by day. The 2023-24 season of the I-League also had some memorable matches with some clinical performances by some of the players. 

With the foreign players proving their worth in the game, certain Indian players also rose to the occasion and played an important part for their club in most of the matches. Amongst the long list of performances, there are a few who regularly kept themselves moving on the field and performed top-notch to keep their name on the sheet. 

In this article, we will take a look at the five most impactful players in I-League 2023-24.

5. Alejandro Sanchez (Gokulam Kerala)

Gokulam Kerala’s Alejandro Sanchez has been clinical with his performance throughout the season. He has scored 16 goals, the most by any player in the league so far, and has also provided four assists in 20 games. 

His best performance was against Rajasthan United, against whom he scored a hat-trick. There have also been two matches in which he scored a goal and provided an assist to his teammate.

4. Mario Barco Vilar (Inter Kashi)

The newly formed club, Inter Kashi also had a dream debut this season. The club from Varanasi outclassed some of the top-class teams and are on the verge of ending the season in the top-five of the points table. 

Mario Barco Vilar has been one of their most impactful players throughout the campaign. The center-forward has scored 12 goals and delivered the same number of assists in the tournament so far from 19 matches.  

3. Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia (Aizawl FC)

The Indian player who has taken the limelight this season is Aizawl FC’s Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia. The 23-year-old from Mizoram has scored 15 goals in the league so far, which is the highest by any Indian player, not just in this season but also in the history of the I-League. 

Earlier, the record was held by Sunil Chhetri and Mohammed Rafi who had scored 14 goals in a single season. Lalbiaknia surpassed their record when he scored his second goal in the match against Churchill Brothers. He also has provided two assists during the campaign.

2. Muheet Shabir (Real Kashmir)

Although Real Kashmir couldn’t get to the top spot in the points table, their performance has been very convincing in the ongoing season. No doubt, Gnohere Krizo has scored 12 goals, which is the most by any player from his club, but it is goalkeeper Muheet Shabir who kept their hopes alive in most of the matches with his brilliant saves under the sticks. 

Muheet holds the top spot in the list of clean-sheets with 12 to his name in 22 matches. He is followed by Mohammedan SC’s Padam Chhetri who has eight clean sheets to boast for. 

1. Eddie Hernandez (Mohammedan SC)

While talking about the top players of the I-League 2023-24, how can we miss the performances of Mohammedan SC’s players, whose brilliance has helped their club to earn promotion to the Indian Super League!

Eddie Hernandez has been frequent in finding the back of the net this season for the Black Panthers. He has scored 13 goals in the campaign so far, which is the most by any player from his club. His best performance came against Rajasthan United, where he netted a hat-trick.
