Huge upset in match week 16 sees a change of the pecking order among mid-table teams in the I-League.

The conclusion of match week 16 of the I-League was enthralling for the fans after an exciting run of games. The match week began with Namdhari FC and Churchill Brothers sharing the spoils while Rajasthan United FC pumped four goals past Real Kashmir FC.

Tuesday’s fixtures witnessed Sreenidi Deccan FC return from two goals down at half-time to win 2-3 against Dempo SC away from home. The second match of the day saw Gokulam Kerala FC steal the win in stoppage time against Aizawl FC to win all three points in a 1-2 away win.

The match week began on Wednesday with Delhi FC hosting high-flying Inter Kashi at home and enthralling fans with a close game. Delhi stood resolute for significant periods of the game despite going down to 10 men after Debnath Mondal was given his marching orders for violent conduct in the first half added time. The game’s defining moment came in the 77th minute when Nikola Stojanovic got the breakthrough for Inter Kashi to win them all three points.

However, more drama was in store for I-League fans who tuned into the final game of matchweek 16. Sporting Club Bengaluru welcomed Shillong Lajong FC to the Bangalore Football Stadium and produced one of the shocking results of the season. The hosts defeated the high-flying visitors by scoring 2-0 courtesy of goals from Clarence Fernandes and Jordan Lamela.

In a game that considered the visitors the favourites, the hosts showed a lot of fight and resilience to grab all three points. Remembering the 5-0 hammering from the reverse fixture, the players never looked like handing Shillong all three points. The hosts took the lead in the 24th minute after a corner kick taken by Jordan Lamela found Clarence Fernandes at the back post to beat his marker and give them an early lead.

Lamela then scored a fantastic second courtesy of a scramble in Shillong’s six-yard box after his initial strike hit the post, which led to Henry Kisseka latching onto the loose ball and finding the Spaniard, who finished well from the centre of the box. While the hosts had some nervy moments towards the end when they went down to 10 men, SCB held on to secure back-to-back clean sheets.

It was a significant win for the newly promoted side, who climbed up to the 10th spot as they set up some distance from the bottom of the table. The ripple effect of this result has added even more intrigue to the club’s ambitions of competing at the top of the table in the coming years.

The Goan club has slipped to second place and has recorded 29 points after 16 games. The top two clubs are followed by Real Kashmir FC, who have 26 points after 16 games and are trailed closely by Gokulam Kerala FC in the third and fourth spot, with only a point separating the two sides.

After their big win in the recently concluded match week, Rajasthan United FC rose to the fifth spot with 24 points. In comparison, Shillong Lajong FC closely followed them in sixth place, with 23 points after the recent successful appeal to the match commissioner. Namdhari FC sits seventh level on points with Shillong; however, they trail with an inferior goal difference. Sreenidi Deccan FC has leapfrogged Dempo SC for the eighth spot with 22 points after the latter’s close loss to the former this week, leaving Dempo in the ninth spot with 19 points.
