The Indian national football team are set to take on the Seleção in a historic match being played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) on the 3rd of October. This match will mark the first time that the Blue Tigers face the 5-times FIFA World Cup Champions.
Despite the stature of the match, this will not be the first time that a Brazilian men’s football team visit India to play against them.
In this article, we will take a look at what transpired on the 13th of October 2016, when the Indian U-17 men’s football team took on the Brazilian U-17 men’s football team in the BRICS U-17 Football Cup.
India hosted the BRICS U-17 Football Cup in Goa

In 2016, the BRICS U-17 Football Cup was hosted in Goa and was the first edition of the tournament consisting of all the BRICS nations (Brazil, India, Russia, China and South Africa). The tournament began on 5th October and ended on 15th October with Brazil winning it, after defeating South Africa in the final.
The tournament was also hosted to aid India’s preparation for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup, which was also being hosted by India.
The match between Brazil and India would be the final match of the Group Stages. By the time the Blue Colts played against Brazil, they had already suffered 3 consecutive losses at the hands of Russia, South Africa and China, respectively.
The Blue Colts came into the match with all hopes lost as they didn’t score even 1 goal against any of their opponents yet.
The Brazil test for the Blue Colts
All hopes that the Blue Colts had left were crushed by Brazil, as Brenner Souza da Silva (better known as Brenner) gave the Seleção a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute of the match with a left-footed strike which ended up in the bottom right corner past the Indian custodian Mohammad Nawaz.
Despite the constant offensive threats posed by Brazil, the spirit never wavered, as in the 19th minute, Komal Thatal made history as he equalised the game with a curled shot taken from the edge of the box.
The equalizer was not enough as over the course of the game; the Blue Colts would be unable to convert their chances and conceded 2 goals in the 30th minute and in the 82nd minute respectively.
The last goal of the group stages was scored by now Brazilian International Vinicius Junior, who would go on to score the most amount of goals in the tournament.
The defensive abilities of India were deemed impressive by then Brazil coach Carlos Amadeu. India would finish the tournament with 4 consecutive losses, while only being able to score 1 goal.
The match would be a glimpse of India’s performance at the FIFA U-17 men’s World Cup, as Nicolai Adam’s side would only score 1 goal in their 3-group stage matches and finish last with no points to show.
