Former Atletico Madrid U17 women’s coach Pamela Conti took over as the India U17 women’s team head coach

The India U17 women’s team etched their name in golden letters after qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup in three different categories. The AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup has been expanded from eight to twelve teams and will take place in Suzhou, China, from May 1 to May 17, 2026.

The India U17 team made it to the Asian Cup after getting the better of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in the qualification round and emerging as the Group B toppers.

With Italian gaffer Pamela Conti’s appointment as the head coach of the India U17 Women’s team, there are a lot of hopes and expectations from the team. She has previously excelled with the Atletico Madrid U17 and the Venezuela women’s national team.

India was placed in Pot 3 and have been drawn alongside stalwarts like Japan and Australia in Group B. Lebanon also joins them as the least ranked team in the group. Who are India’s opponents in AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup?

India will kickstart their AFC U17 Asian Cup campaign against Australia on May 2 in Suzhou. Australia have fared well in the senior category but have failed to clinch a podium finish in the U17 women’s category. The Kangaroo nation finished fourth on two occasions back in 2009 and 2019.

After that, the mighty Japanese team will lock horns against India. One of the most successful sides in this competition and also one of the favourites to win the tournament, Japan have previously won the competition four times and would be India’s toughest test in the group stage.

If India manages to clinch at least a point in the first two games and beat Lebanon, they will still have a serious chance to finish as one of the best-ranked third teams. Their last game will be against Lebanon, who will be making their debut in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup.
