Ryan Williams stars as India hold Panama to historic 1-1 draw

The Indian National Football Team secured a historic draw against the 44th-ranked Panama National Football Team on the 25th of September 2026 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, as part of their FIFA International Friendlies fixtures. A late first-half goal from Ryan Williams ensured that the Blue Tigers held Panama to a deadlock.

In the first half, it was the Blue Tigers who completely dominated the proceedings as they kept the attacking intent high with the likes of Manvir and Ryan Williams, who kept knocking on the opponent’s doors and kept them on alert. The duo combined well and shifted the momentum in favour of the hosts.

In the 41st minute, the Blue Tigers finally found a result to their consistent attack as they found the back of the net, courtesy of Ryan Williams, who found the back of the net, off an assist from Akash Mishra.

In the second half, Panama made multiple substitutions, and this resulted in them bringing the score back to level terms. Omar Javier Valencia took a long-range shot, which went past Gurpreet and helped the hosts to find the equaliser.

Later, despite both teams making their initiatives to find their second goal and take all three points, the defence stood firm, and at full-time, the score ended 1-1.

Ryan Williams draws the first blood

The game began with India’s touch, and Panama made their presence felt in the final third, winning back-to-back corners within the first five minutes. The Los Canaleros primarily made their early offensive initiatives from the left flank, which was effectively defended by Abhishek Singh and Bijoy Varghese.

The Blue Tigers were also looking fairly sharp in the attack, spearheaded by the likes of Manvir Singh and Ryan Williams, who displayed excellent pace to pile pressure upon the opponents.

In the 8th minute, Manvir made an accelerated run from the left and provided a carpet cross inside the box, which unfortunately Ryan Williams was unable to connect with. From then on, the momentum slightly favoured the Blue Tigers, and the 18th minute saw the Manvir-Ryan combo come so close to breaching the opponent’s net. Ryan Williams deployed a shot from outside the box, which, however, missed the goal by a few inches.

India continued to dominate the early exchanges courtesy of Ashique Kuruniyan, Manvir Singh and Ryan Williams, who kept troubling the Panama defence. Meanwhile, every time Panama ventured into Indian territory, Anwar Ali and Bijoy made some thumping clearances and averted the danger.

The Blue Tigers were locked in defence and showed intent in attack. This paid dividends in the 41st minute as Ryan Williams broke the deadlock and provided India with a worthy advantage. Akash Mishra provided a searching long ball to the attacking half, which Ryan Williams won and made no mistake in finding the back of the net after getting into a 1v1 situation with the keeper to give the Blue Tigers the lead.

Panama, desperate for an equaliser, made three changes ahead of the second half and started with increased intent. Panama made one of their first attempts at goal off Giovany Aymar in the 51st minute, but Gurpreet stood tall between the sticks and neutralised the risk. Just a minute later, Manvir made a cheeky move and barged into the penalty box, but his shot found the side netting.

While the Blue Tigers tried to create some attacks, they were lacking the flair they displayed in the first half. In the 66th minute, after multiple attempts, Panama finally brought the score back to level terms.

Omar Javier Valencia, who came in as a substitute, found the back of the net off a long-distance banger, making Gurpreet just a spectator who had to watch the ball glide above him to the goal. Following the goal, Panama kept creating chances, but Gurpreet kept his calm and came to the rescue.

After the 80th minute, India kept aggressively pushing for the second goal and nearly found the goal a couple of times. Ashique provided a teasing ball from the left, which was shockingly missed by Edmund. Later, Manvir attempted a flick from the six-yard area, but to his dismay, it lacked proper weight and connection.

India kept winning set pieces, attacked from left, right and centre and did excellent work to put the opponents under serious pressure. Everything looked in favour of the hosts until it came to finishing, where they were missing the scoring touch.

In the dying minutes of the game, Panama, with all their might, kept knocking on the Indian doors, but the Blue Tigers had the presence of mind, kept their calm, put their bodies on the line and ensured that no goals went past them, and at full-time, India held Panama to a historic draw, which will be remembered for generations ahead.

India will now face five-time World Cup winners Brazil on the 3rd of October at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata and Uruguay on the 6th of October at the same venue.
