India vs Vietnam: All time head-to-head record

The Indian football team faced Vietnam in a one-off international friendly on October 12th. This match was played following the cancellation of the previously planned tri-nation tournament in Vietnam due to Lebanon’s withdrawal from the tournament amidst the ongoing crisis in their country.

Initially, India was scheduled to play Vietnam on October 9 and Lebanon on October 12. But after Lebanon’s exit, the Blue Tigers and Vietnam play out a single friendly match at the Thiên Trường Stadium in Nam Định.

Indian football team head coach Manolo Marquez has selected his final 23-player squad for the match against Vietnam in what will be his second assignment after the Intercontinental Cup. The Blue Tigers are yet to register a win under the Spaniard as the last two matches played under his guidance resulted in a draw and a defeat.

Both sides, however, find themselves in a similar predicament, rebuilding their football programs under new leadership. The Blue Tigers have been winless since November 2023, while the Golden Star Warriors have endured 10 defeats in their last 11 matches even after appointing new tactician, Kim Sang-sik. Both nations will be striving to regain their momentum and improve their performances on the international level.

The football rivalry between both nations goes way back to the mid-20th century, with several encounters in tournaments like the Merdeka Cups and Asian Games. However, due to various factors, meetings between the two teams have been infrequent in recent times.

In their previous meetings, Vietnam have emerged victorious twice, securing a 2-1 win in the LG Cup in 2004 and a 3-0 win in a friendly tournament in 2022. However, the Blue Tigers had their own moments of success as they registered a 3-1 win over the Golden Star Warriors in Pune in 2010. The friendly match in Nam Định marked only the fourth meeting between the two sides which ended in a 1-1 draw.
