ISL 2026-27: Ryan Williams & Mihailo Perović guide Bengaluru FC to 2-0 win over Chennaiyin FC

Ryan Williams scored his first goal of 2026-27 ISL season.

On a rainy night at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, two southern rivals with a history of intense ISL clashes, including in the finals, faced off in their second game of the 2026-27 ISL season.

While Chennaiyin FC were hoping to end their recent struggles against Bengaluru FC, it was the hosts who prevailed, winning 2-0 to extend their winning run against the Marina Machans to five games.

Bengaluru FC started the game on the front foot, forcing Nawaz to make saves early in the game. Ryan Williams gave the Blues the lead in the 24th minute, positioning himself perfectly inside the box to turn in Borja Martinez’s effort after Nawaz saved the initial attempt.

Chennaiyin FC pushed hard for a response and started the second half brightly, showing plenty of positive movement in the final third.

However, a mistake involving their defender Emmanuel Imanishimwe and goalkeeper Nawaz killed their hopes, allowing Perovic to pounce and make it 2-0. A comeback looked increasingly unlikely against a Bengaluru FC side that was on top of its game and playing in front of its home fans.

With this result, Bengaluru FC have won both their opening games of the 2026-27 ISL season, while Chennaiyin FC and Clifford Miranda continue to search for their first victory.

Here are the key takeaways from the game that both the sides must cherish or work on going into their next game.

Time is running out for Clifford Miranda

Clifford Miranda’s Chennaiyin FC are winless in ISL 2026-27 so far.

Clifford Miranda, who took charge at the start of last season, was given an extension for another few seasons despite Chennaiyin FC’s poor showing, having finished 13th in the league with just two wins.

With the club making a wholesale number of signings, it felt as though things could change for Miranda in terms of results. While the style of play and the team’s competitiveness have improved, the poor run of form continues, with Chennaiyin still failing to do the most important thing: secure three points.

Against FC Goa, Chennaiyin FC looked decent in possession but were short of ideas in attack for major parts of the game.

This fixture against Bengaluru FC was no different. What is the use of all that possession if they cannot create something meaningful from it?

Miranda needs to find a solution to this problem. Otherwise, his position at the club could come under increasing pressure.

Bengaluru’s attacking structure is exciting to watch

Bengaluru FC have scored five goals in their opening two games, with four different players finding the net and only Borja Martinez scoring twice.

But it is not just about the goals they score; the way their forwards move, create space and generate chances for one another makes this attack exciting to watch. A Bengaluru FC fan would expect them to become even more lethal as the players develop a better understanding of each other in the coming matches.

Borja started the game on the left before moving into the middle when Ryan Williams was taken off. Ryan, who started the previous game on the right wing, played through the middle and scored against Chennaiyin. Perovic, who started as a striker, drifted towards the right to deliver a dangerous cross across the face of the goal, creating the opening for the first goal.

Soham Varshneya, making his first start of the season, also had a decent outing and will surely improve as he gets more minutes throughout the campaign.

Ramon Tanque continues to struggle as a lone striker

Ramon Tanque, who started up front for the Marina Machans against Bengaluru FC, had an outing similar to his performance against FC Goa. He was decent in several aspects of his game, making runs into space, linking up with the wingers and taking on defenders. He even produced a few nutmegs along the way.

However, the question remains: what is Ramon Tanque being deployed to do? Play as a striker. And what does a striker need to do? Score goals.

If the team’s main foreign striker is failing to get into the box to attack crosses and low deliveries, his link-up play and movement to receive the ball becomes a trade-off for the goals that neither the coach nor the player would want.

If Clifford Miranda wants to maintain a system that allows the striker to move freely, he must consider starting another striker who can stay inside the box and attack crosses while Ramon contributes to the build-up, something they tried in the last ten minutes of the game today.

Pep Munoz’s full-back experiment with Shivaldo Singh must stop

Pep Munoz fielded Shivaldo as a full-back against Chennaiyin FC.

Shivaldo Singh, a winger by trade, started the opening game at right-back before moving to the left-back position for this fixture. It is fair to say he was not at his best in either game, with his performance against Chennaiyin arguably worse than his first outing.

Prakadeswaran and Irfan Yadwad found it relatively easy to get past Shivaldo on the wings and had the space to deliver dangerous crosses into the box. Shivaldo struggled to cut off these attacks, appearing not yet fully accustomed to playing as a full-back.

He also nearly put Bengaluru FC in trouble, as he was fortunate not to be sent off after two successive rash challenges on Irfan within a couple of minutes. Clifford Miranda insisted in his post-match comments that Shivaldo should have been sent off, something that he even had raised with the referee during the half-time break and received a warning.

When Roshan Singh came on at left-back Bengaluru FC’s left flank improved instantly as the number of crosses Chennaiyin delivered and the runs their wingers made reduced significantly, with more of their attacks coming through the middle of the park.

Bengaluru FC vs Chennaiyin FC – Not a rivalry anymore

While the geographical proximity of the two sides and their rich history, including their battle for the 2017-18 ISL trophy, have fueled the rivalry narrative around this fixture, Chennaiyin FC’s journey since that final tells a different story.

With this victory, Bengaluru FC have now won each of the last five ISL meetings between the two sides. Across the 19 matches they have played in the competition, Bengaluru have won 12, three have ended in draws, and Chennaiyin have managed just four victories, giving the Marina Machans a win rate of just over 20% in this fixture.

In their last 14 meetings, Chennaiyin FC have won just once. That statistic alone raises questions about whether this can still be considered a genuine rivalry.

At this point, it feels more like a forced rivalry, with one side repeatedly asserting its dominance over the other.

Who scored the opening goal of the game between Bengaluru FC and Chennaiyin FC?

Ryan Williams scored the opening goal of the game, giving Bengaluru FC the lead midway through the first half.

What is Clifford Miranda’s record as head coach of Chennaiyin FC?

Following the loss to Bengaluru FC, Clifford Miranda’s record as Chennaiyin’s head coach is just 0.61 PPM, winning just twice in 18 games.
