Bengaluru FC vs SC Delhi: Player battles to watch out for in ISL 2026-27
Four Duels That Will Decide the ISL Opener
Opening nights favour the side that wins the small fights. Bengaluru FC host Sporting Club Delhi at Kanteerava, with Pep Muñoz starting his first full season in charge after a fourth-place finish last term. Delhi arrive as the ISL’s second-year newcomers, having finished 12th of 14 in 2025-26.
The two sides have met once before. Bengaluru won 2-0 in February, with Sivasakthi scoring on the stroke of half-time and Sunil Chhetri adding a stoppage-time second. But both squads have been rebuilt since. Bengaluru signed five foreigners, including Menno Koch, Manuel de Iriondo and Mihailo Perović.
SC Delhi also have five, among them Rodriguinho, Duván Viáfara and Juan Peña, and they reached the Durand Cup semi-finals. Bengaluru skipped that tournament, so Delhi have the sharper match rhythm, a point Muñoz himself raised ahead of the game.
Neither side has had time to build a settled system, so individuals will matter more than structure. Here are the four duels to watch.
1. Mihailo Perović vs Duván Viáfara
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

Bengaluru signed Perović as their new target man, and he has come from a productive season at Persebaya in Indonesia. Delhi’s answer is Viáfara, a 6’1″ Colombian centre-back signed for his aerial dominance.
Perović gives Bengaluru a physical reference point who can hold the ball up and bring Ashique and Williams into play. The question is whether a 29-year-old, new to India, can do that against a defender built for exactly this kind of duel. Viáfara wins headers but may be exposed if Perović drops into pockets and drags him out of shape.
If Viáfara wins the physical contest, Bengaluru’s attack loses its anchor and Chhetri becomes a second-half necessity rather than a luxury. If Perović wins it, Delhi’s low block is stretched.

2. Menno Koch vs Rodriguinho

Koch is a 6’5″ PSV academy graduate. Rodriguinho is Delhi’s goal threat, a Brazilian forward who can also play as a second striker.
Koch has the size and, by the club’s own account, the composure and passing range of a European-trained defender. A second striker who drifts off the shoulder and drops into half-spaces is a different problem. Tall centre-backs are least comfortable when turned and run at and with his quick pace Rodriguinho will be a real test for Koch.
If Koch steps out and wins the ball, Bengaluru can play out cleanly. If Rodriguinho pulls him out of position, space opens behind for Delhi’s runners.
3. Manuel de Iriondo vs David Richard Ndayishimiye

This is the central battle. Iriondo is a 33-year-old Argentine defensive midfielder who previously played in France’s Ligue 2 with Grenoble. Ndayishimiye is a Burundian who can play as a central or defensive midfielder and brings stability.
Both are experienced screening midfielders new to the ISL. The more composed of the two will dictate tempo. Iriondo’s age raises a question about covering ground against younger legs, and Ndayishimiye has to prove he can do more than break up play.
The winner shields his back four and starts the transitions. Both clubs’ foreign midfielders are new to the league, so the first 30 minutes will show who has adapted faster.
4. Juan Peña vs Suresh Singh Wangjam

Peña is a Colombian attacking midfielder signed to add creativity in the final third. Suresh is Bengaluru’s workhorse in midfield, tasked with tracking runners and breaking up the play before it reaches the back four.
Peña can find pockets between the lines, but that’s only useful if he gets the ball there. Suresh has to stay disciplined and not get drawn out of position.
If Peña gets time on the ball, Delhi’s forwards get service. If Suresh and Iriondo shut that channel, Delhi lose their main creative outlet.
A game to kickstart the season

Muñoz has continuity, home advantage and Chhetri, who has extended his stay for 2026-27. Tchórz, whose side has the competitive rhythm, has said Bengaluru are well organised but not unbeatable. Expect Delhi to defend deep, hit Bengaluru on the break and wait for a mistake. Muñoz will try to build patiently and let Perović and Ashique stretch the structure.
The tactical question comes down to three things. Can Bengaluru’s new centre-back pairing cope with Delhi’s runners?
Can Delhi’s new midfield hold a line against Bengaluru’s width? And when the game tightens, does Chhetri, at 42, still find the one chance a match like this needs?
