Irfan Yadwad became the first Indian goalscorer in the 2026-27 ISL season

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

The 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) season is underway and long-term rivals FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC played out a 1-1 draw at the Fatorda Stadium in their opening day fixture. In the other game, Bengaluru FC beat SC Delhi 3-2 ar the Kanteerava Stadium.

Both Chennaiyin FC and FC Goa started the ISL match with a calculative approach in the first half. The game exploded into a spectacle in the second half as Irfan Yadwad scored a wonder goal before Chiki equalized for the Gaurs in the 75th minute.

Here are the five big talking points from the game between Chennaiyin FC and FC Goa:

Franchu was replaced after an early injury

Franchu made a name in the Indian Super League with the Kerala Blasters last season, due to which he was signed by FC Goa over the summer. The Argentine had a decent start to the game against Chennaiyin FC, however, he was substituted in the 38th minute after picking up an injury.

While the extent of Franchu’s injury is not known, the former Real Madrid player is a big part of FC Goa’s plans and his absence would severely hamper Goa’s attacking threat. On the other hand, Chennaiyin FC substituted out Glan Martins in the first half and it is not known if the player suffered an injury.

Chennaiyin FC are not committing enough players in attack

Chennaiyin FC had a few good chances in the second half, however, they could not get a second goal, which would have won them three points on the night. Ramon Tanque, who joined the club over the summer, had a decent ISL debut.

However, the Brazilian was left to deal with the deliveries all alone in the penalty box against FC Goa. A lack of support to Ramon in attack would handicap Chennaiyin’s chances of scoring enough goals in the upcoming games.

One of the reasons why CFC finished 13th in the ISL last season was because of a lack of goals. Hence, this would be something that Clifford Miranda would be keeping a keen on improving as the league progresses.

Irfan Yadwad scored a wonder goal

Irfan Yadwad looked slightly off pace at the start of the game against FC Goa. However, the India international silenced everyone in the second half. The forward scored through a shot from the edge of the penalty box to give CFC the lead.

While Irfan has decent pace and physicality to become a renowned player within Indian football, the goalscorer needs to develop consistency. A goal in the first game of the season could help the player settle-in and attempt more shots in the upcoming games.

Nemil gave a decent performance against Chennaiyin FC

While Chiki rescued a point for FC Goa, Muhammed Nemil was one of the best players for the Gaurs on the night. The left midfielder got into constant tussles with Irfan Yadwad and Namgyal Bhutia and also didn’t shy away from taking shots whenever he could.

Madih Talal changed the game for Chennaiyin FC

Chennai were finding it difficult to break down the FC Goa backline in the first half. However, once Madih Talal came into the game in the 60th minute, things changed. Suddenly it looked like Ramon had someone whom he could play the 1-2 touches to and within five minutes, Talal played a big part in Irfan’s goal.

If Chennaiyin are to go to the playoffs in the 2026-27ISL season, expect Madih Talal to play a huge role in this objective.
