Chris Ikonomidis joins East Bengal FC ahead of 2026-27 season

East Bengal have secured the signing of their sixth foreign player for the 2026-27 season in the form of Australian forward Chris Ikonomidis. With the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign around the corner and a key AFC Champions League Two qualifier to play before that, the Torchbearers want their strongest squad available before those major challenges come their way.

Ikonomidis has well over a decade’s worth of experience of playing top-level football, having played across many countries in his career. The 31-year-old is a pretty versatile attacking player, who can operate as an attacking midfielder as well as a winger with relative ease – raising the unpredictability and overall threat of his side’s attacking prowess.

The Australian forward has played in multiple notable countries across his career and has been playing in the A-League over the last few years, where his performances caught the attention of the reigning ISL champions.

The 31-year-old is poised to add a boost of quality to the East Bengal frontline, as here we look at what can be expected from Ikonomidis’ addition at East Bengal.

An experienced player joins East Bengal

Ikonomidis made an ambitious move early in his youth career, moving to Italy to join the youth academy of Serie A side Atalanta in 2012 at the age of 17.

He would spend only one year with the Atalanta youth side, even scoring a goal against Chelsea’s youth team during his stint, before opting to join Lazio in 2013 after around 18 months with Atalanta.

It was at Lazio that the Australian forward’s reputation really started to swell up, as he impressed as part of their youth teams. He performed well for their Primavera squad even winning the Copa Italia Primavera title twice, before going onto play for their senior team as well.

The Australian forward debuted for Lazio in a UEFA Europa League match against Saint-Etienne, making 39 appearances for the Italian club and scoring 11 goals for them.

However, Ikonomidis spent multiple loan spells after debuting for Lazio, playing for the likes of Serie B side Salernitana, Danish side AGF before returning to Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers for a loan for the 2017-18 season. He permanently returned to the A-League to join Perth Glory in 2018.

Ikonomidis actually excelled in his first season back in Australian football, helping Perth Glory win the 2018-19 A-League Premiership title and even winning the A-League Young Footballer of the Year award – having scored nine goals and provided five assists in the campaign.

After spending three years at Perth Glory, Ikonomidis joined Melbourne Victory in 2021, spending three years with them and scoring five goals in that period. Prior to joining East Bengal, he spent two years at Macarthur FC – managing 10 goal contributions in 35 appearances for them.

Ikonomidis has also played for Australia in his international career, scoring two goals in 17 appearances for them.

Ikonomidis’ style of play

The 31-year-old is actually a really versatile attacking player who can operate in multiple roles with relative ease. Even though he is naturally an attacking midfielder, Ikonomidis has proven his quality in being able to operate in either of the two wings as well, while also being able to play in the centre-forward role if really necessary for his side.

He is quite an unpredictable attacking player with an impressive eye for goal, being able to utilise his clever off-the-ball movement to slip past defenders to get into goal-scoring positions. He might not be the fastest attacking player anymore, but Ikonomidis definitely boasts trickery in being able to carry the ball forward into the danger areas and be an overall thorn for defenders with his clever movement.

The Australian forward can definitely add more explosiveness to East Bengal’s attack heading into the new campaign and help their counter-attacking style under Antonio Habas as well.
