Bengaluru FC have been in the ISL final three times previously

Ever since they were introduced to the Indian Super League (ISL) in the 2017-18 season, Bengaluru FC not only played well but also performed consistently, establishing themselves as one of the league’s strongest contenders. Their journey through the world of ISL is marked by an incredible four appearances in the highly prized final.

Bengaluru FC’s record in the ISL finals is a narrative of ambition, resilience, success, and adversity. Their four final appearances just within the gap of a few years point to their competitiveness as well as their role as an annual contender.

Although they have once tasted success by winning the trophy, the two runner-up finishes are reminders of the fine margins that show the unpredictable nature of the game. As they gear up for their fourth ISL final against a familiar opponent, the intense desire to claim another title to their name will certainly drive their every move on the field.

How has BFC performed in ISL finals?

2017-18 season ( Bengaluru FC 2 – Chennaiyin FC 3)

The debut season of the Blues in 2017-18 was truly spectacular. During their first season, Bengaluru FC, under the leadership of the then-head coach Albert Roca, played a brand of football that was pleasing to the eyes and skilful. They eased through the league phase with ease, showing the world a tight-knit team that has an impenetrable defense and the attack being led by the great Sunil Chhetri.

This impressive show was brought to a close in their debut performance in the ISL final, played at home fortress the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. The fairy tale finish though was not meant to be as they met with their Southern neighbours Chennaiyin FC team and fell short to a narrow 3-2 scoreline in a thrilling contest. In spite of the disappointment, being in the final in their maiden season was a powerful statement

The disappointment of the previous season only served as a fuel to the fire of ambition for the Blues under Coach Carles Cuadrat. Having built upon what they have achieved in their first year, the team set off on another remarkable campaign, with an impressive consistency during the league phase. Cuadrat had a different style, one that focused on defensive strength but without undermining their attack.

This journey marked by consistent performances took them to the heights of the league, leading up to a second successive appearance in the eagerly anticipated Indian Super League final. This time, their opponents in the title decider were FC Goa.

In the dying seconds of the match, defender Rahul Bheke leaped and headed a winning goal claiming their first and, to this day, only Indian Super League title. Winning the ISL trophy was a major achievement in the club’s comparatively short history and cemented their position as a force to be reckoned with in Indian football.

2022-23 season (Bengaluru vs Mohunbagan – Penalties 3-4)

Following a couple of seasons in which they failed to reach the final , the 2022-23 season witnessed Bengaluru FC making a comeback under the leadership of Simon Grayson.

Even though they were facing injuries and inconsistency throughout the league stage, the Blues showed tremendous determination and resolve in the playoffs, leading to their third ISL final appearance. This time, their rivals were Mohun Bagan Super Giant (formerly ATK Mohun Bagan)

The final, hosted in Goa, was a fierce and intense clash. Both sides fought hard, leading to a 2-2 draw after extra time. The title finally came down to the penalty shootout, in which Mohun Bagan Super Giant won, beating Bengaluru FC 4-3. This runner-up result, though disappointing, showed Bengaluru FC’s fighting spirit and their capacity to play at the top level even when under pressure.

Making their fourth appearance in the Indian Super League’s final , Bengaluru FC find themselves facing Mohun Bagan Super Giant once again. This final would mean a lot for the Blues, who are eager to avenge their past defeat against the same opponent and finally secure their second ISL championship trophy.
