Bengaluru FC vs Chennaiyin FC: Three key player battles to watch out for
Chennaiyin FC defeated the Blues a few weeks back in a pre-season friendly.
Chennaiyin FC secured their first win of the 2025-26 ISL season away from home against Kerala Blasters FC in a southern derby. This time around, they have the chance to secure their first win of the season in another southern derby, but at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium against Bengaluru FC on 17 October 2026 at 19:30 IST.
However, winning there will not be straightforward for the Marina Machans, as they have not won at the stadium since the 2017-18 ISL final, when they defeated Bengaluru FC to lift their second ISL trophy.
The hosts, Bengaluru FC, are coming off a 3-2 victory in their opening game, having edged past Sporting Club Delhi with a late winner that sent the Kanteerava crowd into raptures.
Chennaiyin FC, on the other hand, failed to secure all three points despite taking the lead against FC Goa at Fatorda. Goalscoring issues continue to trouble Clifford Miranda and his side, who have failed to score more than once in a game since the start of last season.
The two clubs have already faced each other in a pre-season friendly, which ended in favour of the Marina Machans. However, Bengaluru FC were without a couple of key players who were on national team duty, while Chennaiyin FC were also missing Irfan Yadwad and Emmanuel Imanishimwe.
With both southern clubs heading into the derby on the back of positive results, fans of both sides will be hoping to defeat their rivals and gain the upper hand in the banter that follows.
Here are three individual player battles that could have a major say in deciding the outcome of the derby.
Borja Martinez vs Ayush Chhetri
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

Ayush Chhetri, who operates in a double pivot for Chennaiyin FC alongside either Nikola or Hriata, is expected to face a tough challenge against the league’s joint-top goalscorer, Borja Martinez.
Throughout Bengaluru FC’s opening game against Sporting Club Delhi, Borja was unpredictable with his movement, constantly drifting between the wings and central areas.
He was even moved out wide during the latter stages of the game. Jorge Ortiz, who played a similar role for FC Goa in their last game, found plenty of space and time on the ball against a midfield that included Ayush Chhetri.
Although Ayush impressed with his ball-carrying ability and passing, the absence of a specialist foreign defensive midfielder left considerable spaces for FC Goa’s attackers, who managed 19 shots. This is one area Ayush must work on to provide greater stability to the defence and limit Borja’s movement and attacking threat.
Nuno Reis vs Mihailo Perovic

Nuno Reis had a solid debut for Chennaiyin FC in the opening game, winning his ground duels and making several crucial defensive interventions. However, he was at fault for the goal the Marina Machans conceded, losing track of Chiki on a set piece as the FC Goa forward leapt ahead of him to score the equaliser.
Perovic is expected to pose a similar threat. The Bengaluru FC striker displayed impressive physicality and aerial prowess, using his hold-up play and movement to get on the end of crosses. Bengaluru FC also played plenty of dangerous deliveries into the box to complement his strengths.
If Nuno suffers another lapse in concentration, or if Emmanuel Imanishimwe fails to clear the danger and Nuno does not step in to cover, Perovic could have an opportunity to score his first goal of the season after registering an assist in the opener.
Ryan Williams vs Muhammed Saheef

Ryan Williams is one of the most talked-about footballers in India at the moment following his goal against Panama and his performances against Brazil and Uruguay. He carried that form into ISL 2026-27, registering an assist in the opening game and coming close to scoring himself, only to be denied by Nora Fernandes.
Saheef, meanwhile, had a decent outing for Chennaiyin FC against FC Goa. However, he did leave space for Udanta Singh to exploit, although the Bengaluru FC winger failed to capitalise on those opportunities.
The challenge against Ryan will be Saheef’s first major test in Chennaiyin colours. Tracking the Bengaluru FC winger’s movement will be one of his biggest responsibilities.
The Chennaiyin full-back is solid in physical and aerial duels against wingers but can sometimes struggle against players who drift into central areas and excel in tight spaces — qualities that Ryan Williams possesses in abundance.
