Chennaiyin FC’s Bijay Chhetri has recently made it to the headlines as he has become the first Indian player ever to join the Uruguayan second-division club, Colon Futbol Club.
As per the recent declaration, Bijay has been loaned out to the Uruguayan Club by Chennaiyin FC till the end of the year. Moreover, Colon is now placed in third place in Group B of the ongoing Uruguayan Segunda Professional League.
In this article, we will have a look at Bijay Chhetri’s career in football, his performances, and his future potential.
Scouting Report
Career and Performances
Bijay started his senior career with Indian Arrows in 2018. Unfortunately, an injury concern kept him away from the game till he was signed by Chennai City FC in 2019. He made his debut for the club the same year in the I-League, against Aizawl FC, and went on to appear in the very next match as a substitute against NEROCA FC. With an experience of two matches under his belt, Bijay was then signed by Real Kashmir in January 2021.
For Real Kashmir, he made five appearances. His debut for the side was against TRAU FC in the I-League. He also held the back line in two matches for Real Kashmir in the I-League Championship Stage in 2021.
After some rare appearances for the clubs, he came into everyone’s eyeballs when he moved to Sreenidi Deccan in August 2021. The young defender played ten matches for the Hyderabad-based side. He was gradually being used as a substitute till finding his place in the starting line-up against Gokulam FC in an I-League match. In July 2023, Bijay was signed by Chennaiyin FC, where he is yet to make an appearance.
Playing Style
Bijay Chhetri generally plays as a centre-back for his sides. Although he has been tested as a left-back by Sreenidi Deccan, his actual strength is at the centre-back position.
Talking about his playing tactics, it can be said that Bijay is a very natural runner on the pitch, who never sighs away from taking on the threat of the opposition. People who have watched him play can easily state that he never shows a hint of nervousness, even while tackling the experienced players of the opponent side.
Future Potential
The man from Manipur has been training with the Chennaiyin side for around two years. It is quite evident that under expert supervision, he will be developed into an immense force to reckon with for the club.
When it comes to his new stint with the Latin American Club, Colon Futbol Club, which is 106 years old, he will surely get the experience of playing in a condition that no other Indian player has ever found achieved.
This will not just help him develop as a player but will put his status to higher ranks when he returns to his club Chennaiyin FC.
