Chennaiyin FC vs Kerala Blasters FC: Head-to-head record ahead of ISL 2026-27 clash

Twenty-five meetings, a dead-level win column, and a Southern Derby that refuses to pick a side

Some rivalries are built on trophies. The Southern Derby is built on noise. Chennaiyin FC against Kerala Blasters FC has never needed a title at stake to feel like one in the Indian Super League (ISL), because the two clubs represent opposite ideas of what Indian football can be.

Kerala Blasters FC are the people’s club of Kochi, a team that has long played to a stadium rather than a table. The Manjappada turn the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi into a wall of yellow, and their support has survived heartbreak after heartbreak.

Chennaiyin FC are the more restless, reinvention-driven side, a club that has torn up and rebuilt itself while keeping a title-winning edge. Their Supermachans bring a loud, loyal, Marina-breeze energy to the other end of the map.

Put them in the same fixture, and the result tends to be chaos, with goals arriving in bunches and neither crowd letting the other forget it.

By the Numbers

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

Across all competitions, the two sides have met 25 times. The record 8 wins for Chennaiyin FC, 8 wins for Kerala Blasters, and 9 draws. After more than a decade of ISL football, nobody owns this fixture.

The draws deserve attention. Nine of 25 is 36 per cent of the series, a reminder that these matches are often decided by a single mistake rather than a single moment of brilliance. Neither side has ever built the kind of psychological hold that Mumbai City have over some of their rivals.

The goals tell a slightly different story. Kerala Blasters have scored 37, Chennaiyin 31, a margin of six that suggests the Blasters have been the more explosive side, even if they have not been the more successful one. Across 25 games, that makes 68 goals, nearly three per match. This is not a fixture for the defensive purist.

Memorable Encounters

Kerala Blasters FC beat Chennaiyin FC 4–3 on aggregate in the dramatic semifinal of the 2014 Indian Super League (ISL) season on December 16, 2014, advancing to the inaugural ISL final. Kerala dominantly won 3-0 in Kochi in the first leg. The Chennaiyin retaliation happened at the Marina Arena.

Chennaiyin replied by levelling 3-3 on aggregate and extending the game to extra time. And in the final minutes of the game, Stephen Pearson scored the winner to take Kerala Blasters to the finals.

Chennaiyin 6-3 Kerala Blasters (February 2020). The benchmark. Chennaiyin led 3-0 within a minute of half-time after goalkeeper errors were punished, then watched Bartholomew Ogbeche score a second-half hat-trick (48′, 65′, 76′) to drag Kerala back to 4-3. Chennaiyin responded with late goals from Lallianzuala Chhangte and Nerijus Valskis to close it out at 6-3.

At the time, it equalled the highest-scoring match in ISL history, and it came in Kochi, so Chennaiyin did it in the home of the Manjappada.

Kerala Blasters 3-3 Chennaiyin (November 2023). A 3-3 draw in Kochi that suited the fixture’s reputation: no lead was safe, and neither side could claim to have deserved more. Draws are the most common result of this rivalry, and few were as open as this one.

Kerala Blasters’ 3-0 statements. Kerala’s most dominant results arrived in February 2022, part of a season in which they went on to finish runners-up, and again in November 2024. A 3-0 is rare in a derby this tight, and in both cases the Blasters’ wide play and quick transitions stretched Chennaiyin’s back line until it gave way.

Head to Head Record

The Southern Derby is not the most decorated fixture in Indian football, and it does not need to be. It has everything else: a level series at 8-8-9, a goal count of 37-31 that will keep arguments alive, interesting encounters in the past that still get replayed, and two fanbases that treat every match as personal.

  • Matches played: 25
  • Kerala Blasters FC wins: 08
  • Mumbai City FC wins: 08
  • Draws: 09

When the teams walk out in Chennai on October 31, the ledger will be level, and one result will break it. That is reason enough to watch.
