The winner between the two will face Mumbai City FC in the ISL semi-final.
The Indian Super League (ISL) is very close to completing its tenth edition. The league phase is already wrapped up and the spotlight now shifts to the all-important playoffs. Six out of 12 teams have made it to knockouts after 22 league games.
While Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC have finished in the top two and have booked a place in the two-legged semi-finals, the other four teams will play a single-legged knockout game for a ticket to the semi-final. Third-placed FC Goa will host their arch-rivals Chennaiyin FC in the second knockout game.
Let us look at the key battles that could decide the fate of this fixture.
Noah Sadaoui vs Ryan Edwards
Noah Sadaoui has been on fire this season. The Moroccan attacker is one of the most dangerous impactful players in the league and is known for his playmaking, positioning, and pace. With 10 goals and five assists to his name, Noah has the second-most number of goal contributions in the league this season.
But Chennaiyin FC’s rock-solid defender Ryan Edwards will be standing in his way. The Englishman is a beast in the air and has very good numbers to show for his efforts. He averages more than three clearances per game and will have the responsibility to neutralize the danger that FC Goa’s attackers will bring to the table.
Carlos Martinez vs Debjit Majumder
Carlos Martinez has also been in fine form in his debut ISL season. Martinez made a slow start but has grown as a player throughout the league stage. He has scored ten goals this season, including five goals in the last five games. He is currently high on confidence and will look to hurt Chennaiyin FC in this do-or-die game.
On the other hand, Debjit Majumder will have the duty to keep Martinez and his partners at bay with his heroics under the bar. The goalkeeper has played a prominent role in Chennaiyin FC’s run to the playoffs with around 18 saves in their last three must-win games. Moreover, he will be keen to add one more clean sheet to his tally of three clean sheets this season.
Mohammad Yasir vs Rafael Crivellaro
Mohammad Yasir has hit the ground running for FC Goa. The Indian midfielder has continued his fine run of form ever since his move to the Goan side. He has scored three goals and has provided four assists in such a short period for the Gaurs. His creativity coupled with his high press will be crucial for FC Goa in this tie.
Chennaiyin FC’s creator-in-chief Rafael Crivellaro will be up against Yasir in the upcoming game. Crivellaro has been enjoying a good run of form with the Marina Machans this season and has scored four goals and provided seven assists in the process. Both players will have the responsibility to create and make things happen for their sides and it remains to be seen who comes out on top.
