The Mariners have managed to win once in three ISL Finals.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant will be aiming for total 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) supremacy when they face off against Bengaluru FC in the Final at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Saturday (April 12). The Mariners have had a sketchy record against the Blues so far this season, defeating them twice (including once in the Durand Cup), but also suffering a 3-0 loss.

However, the Mariners picked up clinical wins over the former ISL champions in both their meetings in the City of Joy earlier this season.

The Kolkata heavyweights will be playing in their second straight ISL final. They are gunning to become only the second team in the competition’s history to win the ISL league shield and ISL trophy in the same campaign.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant dominated their way to reach the ISL final this time around. They won the 2024-25 ISL League Shield in comfortable fashion, winning 17 of their 24 matches in the league phase and picking up 56 points.

They faced a stern task against a stubborn Jamshedpur FC side in the semi-final, but made an inspired comeback in the second leg to win that tie by a 3-2 aggregate. The Mariners have achieved a bunch of impressive records in the 2024-25 ISL campaign.

They have picked up 15 clean sheets, won 18 of their 26 games and also scored more goals than any other team in the division. With that being said, the challenge of an ISL Final is a different task altogether and the Mariners know that all too well.

They have reached the ISL final in the majority of occasions over the last five years, but it hasn’t always resulted in rewarding finishes for them. With that being said, here we look at Mohun Bagan’s record in ISL finals.

The Mariners reached the ISL final for the very first time in the 2020-21 campaign, which was played in Goa behind closed doors because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They valiantly went toe-to-toe with a strong Mumbai City side in that campaign, fighting hard in the title race.

They even finished level on points (40) at the end of the league phase, but the Islanders won the competition because of a better head-to-head record. The Mariners fought their way to the ISL Final, defeating a resilient NorthEast United FC side in the semi-final as well.

However, they would meet Mumbai City once again in the final on March 13, 2021. The Mariners actually started the game in inspiring fashion, taking the lead through David Williams’ goal in the 18th minute. However, things started to go wrong for them after that.

Antonio Habas’ side conceded a cheap goal in the 29th minute after some miscommunication with Arindam Bhattacharya caused Tiri to put the ball into the back of his own net. The Kolkata giants fought hard for a winner after that, but were just not clinical enough.

Mumbai City made them pay in the 90th minute, when they capitalized on an Arindam error, with Bipin Singh scoring a 90th minute winner to break the Mariners’ hearts.

The first time that the Mariners really tasted success of an ISL trophy was in the 2022-23 campaign. Even though they didn’t have the most memorable league phase, finishing third behind champions Mumbai City FC and Hyderabad FC, the Mariners really picked up their game in the playoffs.

They faced off against Hyderabad FC in the 2022-23 ISL semi-finals, which resulted in two really cagey legs. They played out a gritty 0-0 draw at the Gacchibowli Stadium in Hyderabad before heading to Kolkata.

The Mariners, however, were unable to find a way past the Nawabs’ sturdy back line in 120 minutes, forcing a penalty shootout.

Here, Vishal Kaith ended up being their savoir as he denied Javier Siverio and Bar Ogbeche, allowing the Mariners to get a 4-3 win in the penalty shootout to get to the final. Mohun Bagan set up a date against Bengaluru FC in the final.

The Mariners faced a side with the experience of already having won a final, with the clash taking place in Goa. It ended up being a thrilling, end-to-end display between two of the ISL’s best. The Kolkata side took the lead through Dimitri Petratos’ 14th minute penalty, before the Blues levelled through Sunil Chhetri’s penalty late in the first half.

Bengaluru FC trifled their attacking pattern in the second half before Roy Krishna popped up with a clinical goal in the 78th minute. Just as the game seemed lost for the Kolkata side, they won a dramatic penalty in the 85th minute, which Petratos converted. Both sides were exhausted after that, being unable to score in the extra time to force a penalty shootout.

The Mariners came up big in the shootout. Vishal Kaith made a brilliant save to deny Bruno Ramires, as all four of the Kolkata side’s players scored their penalties to win the 2023-24 ISL final. After this success, their owner Sanjeev Goenka also revealed that the club would be rebranded to Mohun Bagan Super Giant from the 2023-24 season onwards.

Mumbai City FC defeated Mohun Bagan Super Giant by a scoreline of 1-3 in the 2023-24 ISL Final.

The 2023-24 campaign was a really chaotic one for Mohun Bagan. They began it in dominant fashion, before a string of bad losses in the winter period saw Juan Ferrando sacked midway through the campaign. In came Antonio Habas in the second half of the league phase and he brought a lot of success with him.

Habas reshaped his side into a winning machine, with the Mariners ultimately beating Mumbai Cty to the ISL League shield title. They won the league shield by a single point before moving into the knockout phase. The Mariners faced off against Odisha FC in the ISL semi-finals, but ended up facing a 2-1 loss in the first leg at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar.

However, the roar of the Salt Lake Stadium crowd inspired the Mohun Bagan players to make the comeback in the second leg. They picked up a 2-0 win, clinching the tie in 3-2 aggregate to book a place in the ISL final against Mumbai City.

The Islanders, however, were determined to ruin their party. Mohun Bagan were the better team in the first half, with Jason Cummings scoring a nice goal in the 44th minute. Mumbai City, however, turned things around in the second half.

Jorge Pereyra Diaz scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute, putting the onus on the Mariners to push for a winner. This gave the Islanders plenty of counter-attacking chances, with Bipin Singh converting one in splendid fashion in the 81st minute.

Substitute Jakub Votjus scored a late goal to help his side clinch a 3-1 win to break the Mariners’ hearts. Mohun Bagan will look to ensure that kind of a heartbreak does not happen this time around. They’ll aim for a more clinical, affective performance against Bengaluru FC to clinch the ISL double.
