In the final ISL gameweek, history was scripted.
The 2023-24 Indian Super League (ISL) season wrapped up its group stage fixtures with an entertaining night of football in the city of joy. The game marked the end of league stage where Mohun Bagan emerged as the ISL Shield champions.
Goals, drama, heartbreak and entertainment took the center stage in the final week of the league stage. 23 goals, two red cards and some quality football were up on display in the week gone by. Moreover, for the second consecutive week no spoils were shared between the teams as all the six games produced a winner.
Let us take a look at the talking points from ISL 2023-24 gameweek 22.
NorthEast United defeat Odisha FC after 1154 days
NorthEast United wrapped up their season with a statement 3-0 win over Sergio Lobera’s Odisha FC at home. It was a completely dominant performance from the Highlanders and they made their intentions very clear from the get-go.
The visitors were not even allowed with some breathing space as NorthEast United scored thrice in the first half. Parthib Gogoi opened the scoring with his first goal from inside the box before Nestor Albiach and Phalguni Singh added a couple of more goals. Moreover, Mirshad Michu became the first ever goalkeeper in the ISL to deny Roy Krishna from the spot.
Punjab FC end East Bengal’s playoff hopes
East Bengal travelled to the national capital with a hope to keep their playoff hopes alive, but the same were shattered into pieces by Punjab FC. The home side ran riot against the Red & Gold Brigade and handed them an embarrassing 4-1 defeat behind closed doors.
Punjab’s Wilmar Jordan Gil broke the deadlock early in the game before Sayan Banerjee restored parity for his side. But, from there on it was a one-sided affair where Madih Talal, Luka Majcen and Gil tore East Bengal to shreds and eliminated them from the playoffs race. Moreover, this was Punjab’s biggest win of this ISL campaign.
Mohun Bagan snatch the ISL Shield from Mumbai City FC on final day
Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC produced a blockbuster end to the league stage of the 2023-24 ISL season. The defending champions snatched away the ISL Shield from the two-time league shield winners in some fashion.
It was nothing short of a fairytale ending for the Mariners as they pulled off the unthinkable in front of a 61,117 audience at the Salt Lake Stadium. Liston Colaco put his side in the lead in the first half before Jason Cummings doubled the same. Lallianzuala Chhangte did pull a goal back, but it just wasn’t enough as the Islanders succumbed to pressure in their most highly-staked game of the season.
