ISL 2023-24: Punjab FC players shine in Game week 18 Team of the Week
Fans witnessed impressive individual performances in the ISL over the past week.
Indian Super League (ISL) is quickly heading towards the end of its league stage with every passing game. The 18th round of matches was recently concluded for the 2023-24 season and saw clubs making an inspiring effort to attain their seasonal objectives whether it was reaching the playoffs, securing the No.1 spot in the league table or simply playing for pride.
During the various clashes between ISL clubs in the past week, several individuals gained attention with their outstanding performances. Their key contributions were crucial for their clubs in producing positive results, helping them gain momentum as the end of the season approaches.
Looking back at the game week 18 of the 2023-24 ISL, the following players were heads above the rest and made Khel Now’s Team of the Week:
Formation – 4-1-3-2
GK – Prabhsukhan Gill (East Bengal FC)
Despite ending up on the losing side, Prabhsukhan Gill impressed with his performance in East Bengal’s narrow defeat to FC Goa. The custodian conceded only one goal while making six saves, keeping his side in with a slight chance of a comeback.
RB – Seriton Fernandes (FC Goa)
Seriton Fernandes worked extremely hard to help FC Goa snatch a 1-0 victory against East Bengal FC. The full-back made two clearances and four interceptions to help the defense secure a well-deserved clean sheet.
CB – Dimitris Chatziisaias (Punjab FC)
Punjab FC came away from Guwahati with a well-deserved 1-0 win against NorthEast United in the past week. Dimitris Chatziisaias was crucial in helping the Shers keep a clean sheet against a hostile team playing in their backyard. He made eight important clearances in that game.
CB – Suresh Meitei Nongmeikapam (Punjab FC)
Suresh Meitei proved to be a brilliant deputy to Dimitris Chatziisaias and the duo played a brilliant part in allowing Punjab FC to secure a 1-0 win over the Highlanders. He made seven crucial clearances to keep NorthEast attackers at bay in a solid display.
LB – Roshan Singh (Bengaluru FC)
Roshan Singh was impressive in Bengaluru FC’s defensively astute performance which saw them defeat Kerala Blasters FC and keep a clean sheet at the same time. The full-back covered a huge distance, made three clearances, and delivered five crosses during the contest.
CDM – Jayesh Rane (Mumbai City FC)
Jayesh Rane was one of the outstanding performers for Mumbai City FC in their 3-2 win over Punjab FC earlier in the gameweek 18 of the ISL. He provided a sensational assist for the winner scored by Iker Guarrotxena.
RW – Lallianzuala Chhangte (Mumbai City FC)
Lallianzuala Chhangte scored in both of Mumbai City FC’s matches in the gameweek 18 of the Indian Super League (ISL). He opened the scoring against Punjab FC and scored the equalizer against Jamshedpur FC, taking his goal tally to four goals for the season.
LW – Mohammad Yasir (FC Goa)
Mohammad Yasir’s strong start to life at FC Goa continued as the winger delivered another goal contribution. Adding to his two goals in the last two matches, Yasir delivered an assist for Noah Sadaoui’s match-winning goal against East Bengal FC.
CAM – Madih Talal (Punjab FC)
Madih Talal’s meteoric rise in popularity continued as he delivered a masterful performance for Punjab FC against Mumbai City FC in a 2-3 defeat. The midfielder scored a marvelous long-range goal and provided the assist for the second but was unfortunate to end up on the losing side.
ST – Wilmar Jordan (Punjab FC)
Wilmar Jordan scored two goals in two of Punjab FC’s matches in gameweek 18 of the ISL. The striker converted a gorgeous header against MCFC and scored the winning penalty against NEUFC to help The Shers secure three points from the latter game.
ST – Iker Guarrotxena (Mumbai City FC)
Iker Guarrotxena was superb for Mumbai City FC in their 3-2 win over Punjab FC at the JLN Stadium in New Delhi. The attacker scored two fantastic goals, the equalizer, and the winner, to help the Islanders return with three points from the capital city. He was unlucky to fall victim to a hamstring injury after the game.
