ISL 2023-24: Sadiku, Diamantakos headline Team of GW 19
There were a lot of goals and noteworthy individual performances to witness in the week 19 of ISL 2023-24.
Another entertaining gameweek of the Indian Super League (ISL 2023-24) concluded with many goals and memorable moments. The 2023-24 season has been exciting, thrilling and exhilarating for the fans of Indian football. During the past week, clubs of the top-tier Indian football league system delivered high-quality football, thanks to individuals stepping up for their respective sides.
The action from the past week’s round of matches had plenty of goals. It was a particularly successful week for Mohun Bagan players, who recorded two important wins. On the other hand, Mumbai City FC’s Vikram Partap Singh was also impressive as he notched a hat trick against NorthEast United.
Several individuals played key roles for their respective ISL clubs and hence, found their way into Khel Now’s Team of the Week for gameweek 19 of the 2023-24 season:
Formation – 3-5-2
GK – Vishal Kaith (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)
Vishal Kaith made a telling difference in the iconic Kolkata derby. At a crucial juncture of the match, the custodian saved a penalty from Cleiton Silva which turned the game in favour of Mohun Bagan and gave them much-needed momentum. Eventually, Kaith saw his team record a 3-1 win over East Bengal FC.
RCB – Sajad Hussain (Hyderabad FC)
Sajad Hussain will go down as the player who scored the winning goal that secured Hyderabad FC’s first victory of the 2023-24 season. The former ISL champions were heading fast towards a winless season but the defender scored in the dying minutes against Chennaiyin FC to help the Nizams record a 1-0 win away from home.
CB – Anwar Ali (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)
Anwar Ali’s calmness on the ball makes him stand out from the rest of the Indian defenders. The centre-back was solid against East Bengal FC, where he made four clearances, three tackles and delivered nine long balls from the deep. He also provided an assist in the 3-4 away win against Kerala Blasters FC later in the gameweek 19.
LCB – Subhasish Bose (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)
Subhasish Bose stood out in Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s defence during the Kolkata derby where he made six clearances, two interceptions and won seven ground duels. His performance was crucial in keeping the Red & Gold Brigade attackers in check.
CM – Vibin Mohanan (Kerala Blasters FC)
Vibin Mohanan was one of the better performers for Kerala Blasters FC in their 3-4 loss to Mohun Bagan SG over the past week. He scored a sublime opening goal of the game for the Yellow Army, thus erasing MBSG’s early lead.
CM – Yoëll van Nieff (Mumbai City FC)
Yoell van Nieff delivered a masterful performance for Mumbai City FC. He scored a goal from the penalty spot, got an assist and won eight total duels to help the Islanders record a 4-1 win over NorthEast United.
RW – Boris Singh (FC Goa)
Boris Singh played a key role in helping FC Goa secure a 2-1 win over Bengaluru FC. The winger scored the winning goal of the match in the second half. He also threatened the BFC defence on multiple occasions before the crucial strike which earned his team three points.
LW – Vikram Partap Singh (Mumbai City FC)
Vikram Partap Singh became the highest-scoring Indian player in the Indian Super League’s 2023-24 season after scoring an outstanding hattrick in Mumbai City FC’s 4-1 demolition of NorthEast United. With the three goals, the winger took his tally to seven goals.
CAM – Dimitri Petratos (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)
Dimitri Petratos was fabulous over the past week for Mohun Bagan SG. The attacker scored and assisted one goal each during the Kolkata derby. Later on, he assisted another goal for the Mariners in their 4-3 win away from home against Kerala Blasters FC.
ST – Armando Sadiku (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)
Armando Sadiku proved crucial for the Mariners, contributing immensely in their 4-3 win against Kerala Blasters FC over the gameweek 19. He scored a brace and took his season’s tally to seven goals from 17 appearances.
ST – Dimitrios Diamantakos (Kerala Blasters FC)
Despite Dimitrios Diamantakos scoring two crucial goals, the captain of the Kerala Blasters FC was unable to guide his team to three points. He gave his team the lead on the 63rd minute mark but the win eluded the Yellow Army as the fixture ended 4-3 in favour of the visiting Mariners. The striker scored his second deep into injury time which was the 12th goal of the season in 15 appearances, putting him level with Roy Krishna in the race for the Golden Boot.
