The Islanders sit 11th on the table.

A strained relationship with the management, disagreements over squad depth and recruitment, and a lack of quality in key positions ultimately led to Manolo Marquez’s departure from Mumbai City FC after just four matches, making it one of the shortest managerial stints in ISL history.

Manolo Marquez’s brief stint at Mumbai City FC has come to an end, with the Spaniard leaving the club after a difficult start to the Indian Super League 2026-27 season. However, his departure was not an overnight decision following the team’s latest result.

The relationship between the manager and the club’s leadership had reportedly been strained from the very beginning, with disagreements over recruitment, squad quality and the direction of the team becoming increasingly difficult to overlook.

Khel Now understands that Marquez had communicated his desire to leave Mumbai City FC following the opening game of the season. His concerns were not limited to the results on the pitch.

The Spaniard was reportedly unhappy with the squad at his disposal and felt that the team lacked the quality and depth required to compete at the level he expected.

Differences between Marquez and the management from the outset

The problems reportedly began well before Mumbai City’s disappointing run of results. There were disagreements between Marquez and the club’s leadership, even at the training ground, particularly over the squad’s composition and the lack of depth in certain positions.

Differences in expectations reportedly emerged early in the Spaniard’s tenure, with the relationship between the two parties becoming increasingly strained. This comes as a surprise, given Marquez’s long-standing admiration for Mumbai City’s Director of Football, Sujay Sharma.

During his time at Hyderabad FC, the Spaniard had repeatedly praised Sharma and credited him for playing a significant role in the club’s success. The duo had worked together at Hyderabad, winning the ISL title in the 2021-22 season, before Sharma moved to Mumbai City in 2022.

Given their successful working relationship in the past, the reported differences at Mumbai make the situation all the more unexpected.

Marquez is known to be demanding when it comes to standards, both on and off the pitch. Having enjoyed considerable success in Indian football with Hyderabad FC and FC Goa, the manager wanted a squad built around a strong spine of quality foreign players.

His previous success in India was significantly influenced by the quality of his overseas contingent, with both Hyderabad and Goa providing him with players capable of making a difference in key positions.

His departure from FC Goa was influenced by financial constraints and the club’s inability to maintain the same level of investment. After three seasons, Marquez felt that a change was necessary, famously explaining the situation by saying, “In three years, you need to change the coach or change the players.”

With Mumbai, he reportedly encountered a situation that reminded him of some of the difficulties he had experienced towards the end of his Goa tenure.

The foreign recruitment did not meet his expectations, and there was no immediate prospect of bringing in replacements to address the shortcomings. His concerns became more pronounced after the opening fixture, when he reportedly informed the club that he wanted to leave.

An unrealistic pre-season, recruitment concerns, and injuries compound the problem.

Mumbai City managed to score 4 goals from their 4 games under Manolo Marquez.

Marquez’s frustration was also evident in his public comments during the opening weeks of the season. Mumbai City had approximately 45 days of pre-season preparation, but the quality of opposition in their friendly matches was a major concern for the manager.

Following the opening defeat against Churchill Brothers, Marquez did not hold back when discussing the preparations.

“It was an unrealistic pre-season,” he said, expressing his disappointment at having to play against what he described as “very, very, very, very weak teams.”

His concerns were not limited to the pre-season. Following the opening game, Marquez also raised questions about the team’s mentality, stating, “The lack of character in this team is very, very clear.”

The comments offered a glimpse into the manager’s growing frustration from the first game itself. While he repeatedly refused to single out individual players, it was becoming increasingly clear that he was unhappy with the overall situation at the club.

The situation deteriorated further as the season progressed, with injuries to several important players exposing the lack of depth in the squad. Vikram Partap Singh suffered a serious injury shortly after returning from suspension, while Wilmar Jordan Gil also picked up a hamstring injury.

Leandro Otormin subsequently suffered a long-term injury, leaving Mumbai City without several of their key attacking options.

The situation was further complicated by the fact that Mumbai had entered the season with just five foreign players, one fewer than the maximum permitted under league regulations. Injuries to Wilmar and Otormin left Marquez with no choice but to field an entirely Indian attacking line-up, a situation he was reportedly far from happy with.

The manager was forced to make adjustments to his starting XI and rely on younger players in unfamiliar situations. His frustration was particularly evident during the press conference following the Sporting Club Delhi fixture, where he expressed his displeasure at the lack of attacking options and having to deploy Nathan Rodrigues on the left wing.

For a manager who had already raised concerns about the squad’s composition, the injuries only amplified the problems he had identified from the outset. It is understood that Marquez felt he could not take the team forward under the prevailing circumstances and did not believe the squad had the necessary resources to meet his expectations.

However, it would be unfair to place the entire responsibility for the squad’s shortcomings on the management. The foreign players eventually signed by Mumbai City were also approved by Marquez, making recruitment a shared responsibility.

While the quality and depth of the squad clearly fell short of his expectations, the Spaniard was also guilty of a few questionable decisions during his brief four game tenure. Mumbai failed to register a single victory under his watch, and he cannot be entirely absolved of responsibility for the team’s performances.

Furthermore, Marquez joined Mumbai City with an understanding of the club’s financial situation and the constraints it was operating under. While his expectations regarding squad quality may not have been met, the financial realities were not entirely unknown to him when he took up the job.

A temporary arrangement before the final departure

Manolo Marquez had repeated problems with the club’s management.

Although Marquez had communicated his desire to leave following the first game, the club reportedly asked him to continue on a game-by-game basis, at least until the international break, while both parties worked towards a resolution.

A similar situation had reportedly unfolded during his association with the Indian national team, where the Spaniard wanted the formalities surrounding his termination completed before travelling for an away game in Hong Kong.

Mumbai City adopted a similar approach, asking the manager to continue with the team while the contractual situation was being addressed. Marquez is understood to have indirectly communicated to members of the playing squad ahead of the SC Delhi fixture that it would be his final game in charge.

Following the match, the Spaniard travelled to Spain immediately and had no intention of returning to Mumbai for the next fixture against Bengaluru FC after the international break.

This is an important distinction in understanding his departure. While the club have officially announced his exit, the circumstances point towards a separation that Marquez himself had been seeking for some time, rather than a conventional managerial sacking following a poor result.

The exact details surrounding the termination of his contract have not yet been made public. Mumbai City were due to make certain payments to the manager, but there is understood to be no major concern regarding the financial settlement. Marquez is also understood not to be seeking a payoff as part of his departure.

What next for Mumbai City FC?

The Islanders lost their most recent match in the ISL 2-3 against SC Delhi at home.

Marquez’s departure leaves Mumbai City FC with another significant decision to make at a crucial stage of the season. The Islanders have managed just two points from their opening four matches, marking their worst start to an ISL campaign in the club’s history.

The club now has approximately a week to identify a replacement before the international break concludes and the team returns to action.

Who Mumbai City appoints as Marquez’s successor remains to be seen, with the club yet to provide clarity on its next course of action. In the official statement announcing the Spaniard’s departure, Mumbai City FC Director of Football Sujay Sharma said:

“As with every ISL club this season, we are navigating a new era for Indian football. In many ways, this marks a fresh start for the top tier of the Indian game. We brought Manolo to the club for his experience and track record in Indian football.

Our focus now remains on supporting the first team and achieving our objectives for the ongoing season. Further updates on the squad and coaching setup will be communicated through the club’s official channels in due course.”

Marquez’s departure ultimately exposes a larger question about Mumbai City’s ambitions and the direction in which the club is heading. The Spaniard wanted a particular standard of quality, especially in the foreign contingent, and was unwilling to compromise when those expectations were not met.

While he too had his share of shortcomings during his brief tenure, the circumstances surrounding his departure raise questions about the club’s recruitment strategy and its ability to provide the head coach with the resources required to compete.

Finding a replacement will be Mumbai City’s immediate priority, but appointing a new manager alone will not resolve the underlying issues. The Islanders will need to address the concerns surrounding squad depth, recruitment,t and their long-term ambitions if they are to get their season back on track.

When will Mumbai City FC play their next match in the ISL 2026-27 season?

Mumbai City FC will next play against Bengaluru FC at the Sree Kanteerava in Bengaluru on 20th November.

Who is the Captain for Mumbai City FC in the ISL 2026-27 season?

Indian International, Akash Mishra is leading the Islanders in the ISL 2026-27 season.
