Greg Stewart was brought on very late by Jose Molina against Chennaiyin FC.

Jose Molina’s Mohun Bagan kept it very late to secure their 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC in their Indian Super League (ISL) clash at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Saturday (November 30).

The Mariners were frustrated all game long before a bit of magic from Jason Cummings resulted in an 86th-minute winner to take them to the top of the ISL table.

But the main reason for the Mariners securing all three points rather than ending up with only one point was their super-sub, Greg Stewart. He made an immediate impact after coming back in the 85th minute, striking the post with a brilliant shot before setting up Jason Cummings’ goal with a superb assist.

That sparked questions from fans about why the Scottish magician was kept on the bench for so long and only brought on for the last bits of the game. Jose Molina gave his explanation for this in the post-match press conference, as he explained: “It was not easy to keep rotating the foreigners. I was happy with the work Jamie Maclaren and Dimitri Petratos were doing.

“They weren’t lucky in front of goal, but worked well and we felt it could be a good moment for Jason Cummings to come in as Jamie Maclaren was tired and Dimitri Petratos was doing some good actions. In the end, I opted to give a chance to Greg Stewart hoping something good would happen that’s what happened.

“I’m happy for the team, happy for him and happy for Jason Cummings to score a really good goal. It’s a new step for us in the league to get back to the top, but we need to keep going for the next match against NorthEast United – which will be a really tough game,” Jose Molina also added.

Greg Stewart took his assist tally to five assists this season in the ISL, which is more than what any other player has managed so far. He’s now definitely locked in to start for Mohun Bagan in their tricky trip to NorthEast United in their next ISL game.
