Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City will face off in what is the ‘finale’ for the Indian Super League (ISL 2023-24) Shield championship at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Monday (15 April). With the Mariners currently two points behind the Islanders, Antonio Habas’ side will be going all out for a win, while Mumbai City will be equally determined to win their third ISL Shield.
The Stakes
Mohun Bagan
Before heading into the January break before the AFC Asian Cup, Mohun Bagan seemed down and out of the ISL Shield race. They fell quite far behind the league leaders before Antonio Habas came back and rejuvenated their hopes. The Mariners have lost just once under the Spaniard and are clinging onto their ISL Shield dreams heading into the final round.
The equations are simple for them – go for the win! Mohun Bagan must produce an even better performance than what they did in the 4-0 thrashing of Bengaluru FC. The Mariners have to be ruthless, decisive and also at their very best defensively, to oust this in-form Mumbai City side and earn a chance to play in Asia next season.
Mumbai City
Mumbai City are in a more comfortable position heading into this tie. For them, even a draw will be enough to seal the championship. However, after nearly losing to the Mariners in the reverse fixture earlier this season, the Islanders could be cautious in their approach. But, Petr Kratky is unlikely to ask his side to settle for a point.
He’ll want them to maintain their high-octane approach, pressing the opposition players intensely, winning possession in key areas and tormenting them on the counter-attack. Mumbai will aim to reinstate their reputation as India’s undisputed best side by being at their prolific best and silencing the Salt Lake Stadium with a clinical performance.
Injury & Team News
Mohun Bagan will be sweating on the fitness of Sahal Abdul Samad, who has a chance to feature in this clash. Iker Guarrotxena and Ayush Chhikara are ruled out for Mumbai City due to injuries. The Islanders will also miss Vikram Partap Singh, who is suspended.

Players to Watch
Dimitri Petratos (Mohun Bagan)
Dimitri Petratos has been one of Mohun Bagan’s most prolific players this season and has only gotten better in Habas’ system. He loves getting the freedom to roam around to the wide areas or play in between the lines, excelling in his independent role. Petratos has 10 goals and four assists so far this season, something he will aim to improve against Mumbai City. The Aussie forward will be key for the Mariners to unlock and rattle the opposition’s backline.
Petratos will need to be clever with his off-the-ball runs and give his teammates the chance to find him in the decisive pockets of space. He’ll also need to be at his very best with his final-third passing and set-pieces to create big chances, and also bring his goal-scoring boots to be a menace for the visitors.
Lallianzuala Chhangte (Mumbai City)
Mumbai City realize the importance of goals in a game like this. If they can score one or two goals, it’ll immediately put the pressure on Mohun Bagan to go completely all out in attack and leave room for the Islanders to score more and pile on their misery. That is exactly why Petr Kratky needs his forwards to be at their clinical best from the get-go. Lallianzuala Chhangte is enjoying a prolific season, having scored six goals and provided six assists so far.
The 26-year-old has developed into an all-round threat, be it with his movement, dribbling ability or final product. Chhangte has to be decisive with his work against Mohun Bagan, timing his runs properly and exposing Mohun Bagan’s vulnerabilities on the wings. He’ll look to carry the ball into the forward areas and create chances with his clever passing, as well as get at the end of chances to clinically finish off opportunities and inspire his side to a big win.
