Mohammedan SC are the newest entrant to ISL in the 2024-25 season.

One of the oldest clubs in Indian football, Mohammedan SC of Kolkata happens to be the newest member of the Indian Super League. The ongoing ISL, that is the 2024-25 season is the debut one in the league. They clinched the prestigious I-League last season to earn a spot in the Indian top tier, becoming the only club after Punjab FC to earn a spot here.

Unlike the stalwarts Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, the third Kolkata giant decided to play from Kishore Bharati Krirangan, and not the iconic Salt Lake Stadium. Mohammedan SC entered the season with a game at their home ground, and though they lost it, they did impress all. The side even drew against giants FC Goa in the next one and won a game against former champions Chennaiyin FC.

The misery however started thereafter. They were trampled by defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giants in their fourth ISL game, and since then the humiliation has continued as they lost all barring two draws against East Bengal FC and Odisha FC.

Despite such results, the club has kept faith in their coaching staff, led by Andrey Chernyshov. So, let’s delve into how Mohammedan SC’s only coach fared in the Indian top-tier league.

Andrey Chernyshov was very impressive last season, especially with his 4-3-3 attacking formation. Mohammedan SC formed one of the best sides possibly in the I-League, and the Russian coach displayed consistency and dominance throughout 2023-24. They played like champions and became one.

This season, it’s completely different. The level of ISL is hitting hard on the players and the coach. The team formed doesn’t look very competitive, and the coach looks clueless in the tough tier one. He started by impressing all but was soon hit hard by reality. He is often seen taking the 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation and playing with a holding approach to protect the side from humiliation.

The 56-year-old has only one win, three draws, and nine losses in 13 ISL games he has managed till now. This tallies to six points in total, at 0.46 points per game. His side has scored five and faced 22 goals in total.

However, Mohammedan SC are not looking very competitive in ISL. Even the Kolkata football legend Dipendu Biswas, who is the Sporting Director of the club hasn’t looked much innovative. The club must take the January transfer window seriously if they look to come strong.
