The Black Panthers are the first club to be promoted to the ISL.
The 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) season is seeing the light of dawn, as the teams are preparing in full swing to once again compete in India’s premier footballing competition.
This season, for the first time in its 10 years of rich history, the ISL will feature 11 sides, with Mohammedan SC being the latest addition to the roster.
After quite a successful I-League campaign, the Black Panthers secured promotion into the ISL, which saw them finish top of the table and become only the second team to secure promotion into the ISL.
The historic club, formed 133 years ago, have always been a pioneering force in the nation’s football landscape. Having formed late into the 19th century, Mohammedan SC enjoyed a glorious period in the first few decades and were amongst the top-ranked Indian sides.
But then came a gradual downfall and a period of major failure, where Mohammedan faced an extreme financial crisis, being relegated both from the National Football League, as well as the National Football League 2nd division.
The period of extreme hardship finally started to wither about a decade ago and from there on the club has been making extreme progress.
New home ground for Mohammedan SC
Mohammedan SC played their home games at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan last season, but now with two ISL teams (East Bengal and Mohun Bagan) already playing in the VYBK, Mohammedan had no other option but to shift tents.
Having now reached the top of Indian football once again, Mohammedan SC have found a new home ground, in the looks of the Kishore Bharati Krirangan, which is a multi-purpose stadium with a seating capacity of 12,000 and has hosted several national level games over the years, including Durand Cup games.
However, Mohammedan SC’s Kolkata derby games against East Bengal and Mohun Bagan will be played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan or the Salt Lake Stadium, on account of its immaculate seating capacity of more than 60,000 spectators.
