Mohun Bagan’s highest attendance came in the ISL final against Mumbai City FC.
Mohun Bagan had a highly eventful Indian Super League 2023-24 season. There were a number of twists and turns in their rollercoaster journey, with the Mariners fighting hard to win their first ever ISL shield championship at the end of the league stages.
Their campaign, however, ended in bitter fashion as they failed to do the ‘ISL double’ and lost out in the ISL final against Mumbai City FC. Despite that, the Kolkata heavyweights created a number of prominent memories with their exciting football and were also blessed to have an admirable fanbase acting as their 12th man.
Mohun Bagan’s matches were absolutely packed with their die-hard supporters, who flocked in big numbers in almost every game. That has allowed the Mariners to set a new attendance record for a single ISL season for a participating team, with a total attendance of 5,06,709 for all their home matches in the campaign. In fact, this is actually the highest-ever attendance in any season in Indian football history achieved by a particular team over the course of a single season.
The Mariners played a total of 13 league games at home, including 11 in the league stages apart from one leg of the ISL semi-final and the final too. Their average attendance for these matches was 38,978 – the highest achieved by any ISL team in the 2023-24 season.
The highest-attendance that a Mohun Bagan home match saw was in the final against Mumbai City FC. A whopping 62,007 fans turned up to watch the Mariners in action against the Islanders. This also set the record for the highest attendance in an ISL final in the competition’s decade-long history.
The Mariners have also been able to comfortably oust their average attendance from the 2022-23 season. In that campaign, their average home attendance was around 25,072 – and they saw a sharp rise of over 14,000 supporters that flocked to watch their home games on an average basis in the 2023-24 campaign.
Mohun Bagan will hope that this home attendance level keeps growing moving into the 2024-25 season. Not only do the Mariners have to defend their ISL shield and fight for the other cup competitions, they will also be playing in the AFC Champions League 2 and be allowed to play at least three home games at the Salt Lake Stadium as a result.
If they can keep performing at the level they did under Antonio Habas, then Mohun Bagan will continue attracting their fans to fill up the Salt Lake Stadium and help them keep dominating the attendance charts in Indian football.
