Tiri faced a lot of criticism when he initially signed for the club in 2023.
Following their ISL 2023-24 championship triumph, Mumbai City FC are taking proactive steps towards strengthening their squad for the upcoming season. Amidst significant roster changes, including the departures of key players like Rahul Bheke to Bengaluru FC, Vinit Rai to Punjab FC as well as both Jorge Pereyra Diaz and Alberto Noguera also heading to Bengaluru FC, Mumbai City are close to securing some vital continuity in their lineup.
Khel Now can confirm that Mumbai are negotiating to finalize terms with veteran centre-back Tiri to extend his contract until the end of the ISL 2024-25 season. Despite interest from multiple ISL teams, head coach Petr Kratky sees retaining Tiri as crucial, particularly given the loss of experienced players from the squad. The club view Tiri as an integral part of their defence for the upcoming season and expect him to sign the contract extension in the coming days.
Tiri, one of the most seasoned players in ISL history, began his league career in 2015 and has since accumulated 133 appearances, totaling over 11,332 minutes. In the 2023-24 season, he featured in 23 matches for Mumbai City, further solidifying his reputation as a reliable and skilled defender.
According to sources familiar with the situation, “Several ISL teams are interested in Tiri, but Petr Kratky believes it’s crucial not to lose all the experienced players from the squad. He views Tiri as an important asset for the upcoming season and the club are optimistic about finalizing his contract extension in the next few days.”
Tiri’s experience and leadership bolstered Mumbai’s defence, bringing stability and organization to the backline. His aerial prowess and ability to read the game are remarkable, while his distribution skills can initiate counter-attacks, making him the perfect defender Kratky needs at the moment.
