The Islanders add much-needed versatility to their squad.

Prabir Das, a two-time ISL winner with ATK and I-League champion with Mohun Bagan, has endured a tough stint at Kerala Blasters since his high-profile move from Bengaluru FC. Injuries have significantly limited his game time to nine ISL appearances for the Blasters in the last two seasons, including a mere 13 minutes this season.

Even when fit, Das has struggled to reclaim his spot in the starting XI, making his time at the club all the more challenging.

Looking for regular game time, Das has now found a new opportunity.

Prabir Das has joined Mumbai City FC on loan for the remainder of the ISL 2024-25 season.

“Mumbai City FC has agreed to a loan deal with Kerala Blasters for an undisclosed loan fee for Prabir Das”, a source tracking the transfer revealed to Khel Now.

Das has undergone medical and will join Mumbai City FC’s first-team training later this evening.

What is the importance of Prabir Das’s signing for Mumbai City?

Mumbai City FC, currently sitting seventh in the ISL 2024-25 table with 20 points, are under pressure to secure a playoff spot. Compared to their recent dominant performances, Petr Kratky’s side has struggled to replicate their past successes.

Prabir Das brings a wealth of experience and versatility to the squad. Primarily a right-back or right wing-back, he can also provide cover on the left flank, giving Petr Kratky, the tactical flexibility of playing back five or three.

Hmingthanmawia Ralte (Valpuia) has impressed fans with solid defensive displays this season, earning a national team debut against Malaysia in November 2024. However, Valpuia’s limited attacking overlaps have affected the team’s width on the right side.

Prabir Das’s arrival could balance the equation. His forward runs and crosses could unlock defences while allowing Kratky to experiment with different formations, like a back three or five, to make the team more unpredictable.

With Das’s attacking capabilities, Mumbai City FC could see a more dynamic right flank, potentially easing the burden on captain Lallianzuala Chhangte, who has struggled with form due to opponent teams doubling up on him defensively.

Gain for both clubs

For Kerala Blasters, the loan move provides financial relief by saving Das’s wages for the season, which can be redirected to strengthen their squad in other key areas.

For Mumbai City, the deal is about strengthening their team at a critical juncture. With Das’s experience and attacking instincts, they hope to bring more energy and creativity to their play as they aim for the playoffs.

Both clubs stand to gain, and fans will now eagerly watch how Prabir Das fits into the Mumbai City FC setup.
