Mumbai City FC strengthens their squad ahead of ISL 2025-26

Mumbai City FC have strengthened their midfield by bringing in Finnish international Joni Kauko on a short-term contract until the end of the season, ahead of the ISL 2025–26 campaign.

The move adds calm, experience and tactical flexibility to the Islanders’ squad as they prepare for the challenges ahead and look to stay competitive across competitions.

At 35, Joni Kauko brings a vast amount of experience with him to Mumbai City FC. The Finnish midfielder is primarily a central midfielder but is equally comfortable sitting deep as a defensive midfielder or pushing forward in a more attacking role, making him a versatile option in the middle of the park. His experience is backed by 28 appearances for the senior Finland national team.

Kauko started his club career in Finland before moving to Germany, where he played for FSV Frankfurt. He is no stranger to Indian football either, having turned out for Inter Kashi in the I-League and Mohun Bagan SG in the ISL.

With 18 I-League appearances and over 30 games in the ISL, Kauko arrives with a strong understanding of the league, its intensity, and its unique challenges.

How does this move impact Mumbai City FC

Joni Kauko’s arrival gives Mumbai City FC exactly what they were missing in the middle of the park, experience, balance, and reliability. His ability to play across multiple midfield roles allows the coaching staff greater tactical flexibility, whether Mumbai need a steady presence shielding the backline or someone who can control the tempo higher up the pitch.

With a long season ahead, Kauko also adds much-needed depth and leadership to the squad. His understanding of Indian football, combined with his international experience, means he can settle in quickly without a long adaptation period.

For a team that values structure, ball retention, and intelligent positioning, Kauko’s presence could prove crucial in tight games where control and composure make the difference.
