Nikhil Barla has been an emerging youngster for the Red Miners.

Nikhil Barla, a promising young right-back from Khunti, Jharkhand, has rapidly risen through the ranks to establish himself as one of Jamshedpur FC’s most exciting talents in the ISL. Growing up in a modest village with mud houses and no proper infrastructure, Barla’s football journey began in the most unassuming of settings, a vacant plot where he played barefoot with friends every evening.

Barla’s career took a significant turn when he was selected for the prestigious Tata Football Academy (TFA), a breeding ground for Indian football legends. His journey from playing on uneven village grounds to gracing the Furnace as part of Jamshedpur FC’s senior team is a testament to his resilience and determination.

The young defender has already made a name for himself and is now the most sought-after youngster in the ISL as he contributed significantly to Jamshedpur FC’s ascent in the ISL points table making them one of the strongest contenders for the ISL Shield, this season.

In an exclusive interview with Khel Now, Nikhil Barla opened up about his journey from Khunti to Jamshedpur FC, the challenges he faced along the way, and his aspirations of one day donning the Indian national team jersey. He also shared his thoughts on working under coach Khalid Jamil and the invaluable lessons he has learned from his time at the Tata Football Academy.

Growing up in the quaint village of Khunti, Nikhil Barla’s early years were far removed from the modern comforts of an urbanized city. “There were mud houses, no electricity, and life was simple but challenging,” recalls Barla. Though he moved to Ranchi at the age of three, the connection to his roots remained intact through regular visits to his grandmother.

“There was no proper ground to play football, just an open piece of land. But those moments, playing barefoot with my friends, are what made me fall in love with this beautiful game,” he says with a smile. From those humble beginnings to donning the red of Jamshedpur FC, Barla’s journey has been nothing short of inspirational.

On cherishing the TFA dream

His footballing dreams took a massive leap forward when he was selected for the prestigious Tata Football Academy (TFA)—a breeding ground for some of India’s finest football talents. “It’s the most prestigious academy in India. To be part of it was an incredible feeling. Even today, being known as a TFA graduate fills me with immense pride,” he shares.

Barla’s rise continued as he represented Jharkhand in the Santosh Trophy, where he bagged the ‘Man of the Match’ award twice. Speaking about the state’s rich yet underexplored footballing talent, he says, “Playing for Jharkhand was a proud moment. There’s so much potential here, but exposure is limited. My advice to aspiring footballers is to grab every opportunity, attend trials, and work hard. Hard work is the only key to success.”

The pride of donning the Jamshedpur FC jersey

The leap from TFA to Jamshedpur FC’s senior team was a defining moment in Barla’s career. “It was a dream come true, not just for me but for my family as well. Playing for my home team and alongside the senior players was a proud and emotional experience,” he reflects.

The Indian Super League (ISL) has been a transformative platform for young footballers, and Barla has relished the opportunity to grow in this competitive environment. “Interacting with foreign players and coaches wasn’t intimidating; it was inspiring. Over the last three years, I’ve learned so much from them, their perspectives, techniques, and professionalism have had a big impact on my game,” he explains.

Barla’s gratitude to Khalid Jamil

One of the pivotal figures in Barla’s development has been Jamshedpur FC’s head coach, Khalid Jamil. “Coach Khalid has been with us since last year, guiding and supporting us. There’s a unique understanding between him and the players, he knows how to bring out the best in us. Having an Indian coach certainly makes communication easier and helps build a strong connection,” says Barla.

Despite the challenges of limited game time early in his career, Barla emphasizes the importance of patience and perseverance. “As players, we need to stay focused and wait for the right opportunity. When that moment comes, we must deliver our best. Hard work and persistence always pay off,” he states confidently.

The Furance feels like home for Barla

For Barla, playing at the iconic Furnace, a stadium he once watched matches in as a fan is a surreal experience. “It’s special beyond words. To play in front of the fans who cheer you on every step of the way—it’s a different level of motivation. And when my family is in the stands, it adds an extra layer of pride and joy,” he reveals.

As competition intensifies at Jamshedpur FC, Barla sees it as an opportunity rather than a challenge. “The competition is healthy. Everyone supports each other, but we all push ourselves to perform better. At the end of the day, it’s the coach’s decision who plays. It’s about growing together as a team,” he concludes.

His dream to represent the Indian team

While his immediate focus remains on excelling in the ISL, Barla harbours a dream shared by every Indian footballer: representing the national team. “Wearing the blue jersey is every player’s ultimate goal. For now, I’m focused on giving my best for Jamshedpur FC, but I hope to earn my place in the national team soon,” he says.

From the dusty grounds of Khunti to the hallowed turf of the Furnace, Nikhil Barla’s journey is a testament to the power of dreams, hard work, and unwavering belief. With his sights set on greater heights, the young right-back is poised to make an indelible mark on Indian football.
