NorthEast United FC vs Chennaiyin FC: All-time Head-to-head record

Chennaiyin FC have won just once in their last eight games.

Two teams coming into this game on the back of contrasting results will take the field at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on May 10, 2026, as NorthEast United FC hosts Chennaiyin FC in their penultimate home game of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season.

NorthEast United are coming off a nail-biting thriller against Inter Kashi in which they raced into a 2-0 lead, held a numerical advantage, allowed the opposition back into the contest, and then snatched victory in the dying moments thanks to a stunning volley from Parthib Gogoi to seal a 3-2 win.

It was the first victory in six games for Juan Pedro Benali’s side and a much needed one indeed. More importantly, it should allow NorthEast United players and staff to approach the Chennaiyin FC clash with a positive mindset and confidence.

For the Marina Machans, however, Clifford Miranda’s ‘progressive possession-based football’ approach is yet to click in the way he would have hoped. Chennaiyin FC currently sit 13th in the table with just 2 wins from 11 games. Their most recent outing ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Punjab FC, while the match before that saw them suffer a heavy 4-1 loss to Jamshedpur FC at the Furnace.

With only seven goals scored all season, the second lowest in the league, their inability to convert chances in attack will be a major concern for Clifford Miranda given the quality of strikers available in his squad.

Chennaiyin FC dominate in head-to-head records:

Historically, these two sides have never met in a major final or semi-final in any competition. Even so, they have developed a competitive rivalry ever since their first meeting in 2014 during the inaugural season of the Indian Super League which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Chennaiyin FC hold the upper hand in the head-to-head record across all competitions. The Marina Machans have won 11 of the 24 meetings between the two sides, while NorthEast United FC have won 8. Only once in those 24 encounters has the fixture ended goalless, a clear indication that this matchup usually delivers goals.

There have even been two matches in the past that finished 4-3, with both the clubs winning one each. The first came when Eelco Schattorie’s NorthEast United FC defeated John Gregory’s Chennaiyin FC 4-3 at the Marina Arena, thanks to a hat-trick from Nigerian striker and ISL legend Bartholomew Ogbeche. The second came more recently in 2023, when a young Sajal Bag came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner and secure all three points for the hosts Chennaiyin FC.

One meeting that many Chennaiyin FC fans will remember fondly is the 7-3 thrashing of the Highlanders under Thomas Brdaric. Nasser El Khayati was at his best that day and announced himself in the ISL, with the Moroccan scoring three goals and providing two assists.

Beyond their ISL meetings, these two clubs have also faced each other twice in the Super Cup, with Chennaiyin FC coming out on top on both occasions.

The most recent meeting between the two sides in Guwahati ended in a 3-2 win for Owen Coyle’s Chennaiyin FC. A brace from Wilmar Jordan and a penalty from Lukas Brambilla secured all three points for the Marina Machans despite goals from Nestor Albiach and Alaeddine Ajaraie.
