Chennaiyin FC will face FC Goa on Saturday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda

Owen Coyle’s Chennaiyin FC are one of the clubs looking for a top-six berth as the race for the playoffs in the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign is heating up with just 7-8 games remaining for each team. However, the Marina Machans have won just once in their last 10 games.

FC Goa on the other hand are eyeing the ISL Shield. Manolo Marquez’s side are currently second with 30 points and trail the league leaders Mohun Bagan Super Giant by 7 points. Facing the Gaurs next, Chennaiyin FC manager Owen Coyle addressed the media before the game.

Owen Coyle compares Sandesh Jhingan to Sunil Chhetri!

FC Goa have been unbeaten since Sandesh Jhingan returned to the starting XI in November 2024. The veteran defender had suffered an ACL injury and was out of action for close to 10 months before making a comeback.

Talking about Jhingan’s return and impact at FC Goa, Owen Coyle said, “I think, and actually in regards to the FC Goa game, there’s no coincidence that Goa have been on an outstanding run since Sandesh Jhingan came back into the team at the back.”

“I mean, Sunil Chettri has had an unbelievable career and the plaudits are well deserved. But I would put Sandesh Jhingan on the same level because he’s had even career-threatening injuries to deal with.”

The Chennaiyin FC manager concluded by saying, “The impact he Jhingan has on his team is commendable. FC Goa, as you know, had a troubled start to this ISL season. Then Sandesh Jhingan came back into the game and they’ve been on a terrific defensive run since then.”

Chennaiyin FC manager showers praise on his star – Connor Shields!

Connor Shields is having a wonderful season at Chennaiyin FC. The 27-year-old has assisted eight goals and scored once in 15 ISL games this season for the Marina Machans. In recent games, the Scotsman has been playing more in a more attacking role, which has helped his team in an attacking sense.

When asked about Connor Shields, Owen Coyle praised the player and said, “I think Conor’s had an outstanding season. I spoke to him and I still think he can add even more goals to his game.”

“But in terms of his work rate, his crossing, his chances and creativity, what he brings to the team he’s been good. Even when Ryan was missing. Connor took the added responsibility of being captain, which is important.”

Concluding with Connor Shields’ new role in the team, the Chennaiyin FC coach said, “We want Connor to grow and develop and build those leadership skills. But yeah, we want players in more advanced positions that we can get and take an opportunity to give us goals and win games.”
