The Blues came out on top in a topsy-turvy game against the Tuskers.
Indian Super League (ISL) club Bengaluru FC enthralled their home fans with their attacking prowess en route to a much-needed 4-2 win over the Kerala Blasters FC. Renedy Singh was happy with his boys performing brilliantly at home. The Blues were involved in yet another pulsating Indian Super League clash and won the game courtesy of goals from Ryan Williams and a brilliant Sunil Chhetri hat-trick performance.
Assistant coach Renedy Singh oversaw the game with head coach Gerard Zaragoza going back home for personal matters. While the Blues were cruising 2-0 at half-time, Kerala showed a lot of heart to respond with two goals of their own. In an end-to-end game, it was ultimately Sunil Chhetri who made all the difference on the night.
The assistant coach lauded the players’ execution of their game plan and resilience under pressure during the post-match press conference.
Bengaluru FC’s dominant first-half performance
While talking about Bengaluru’s strong start, Renedy Singh drew parallels to the second-half momentum they had made from their previous game against Odisha FC. While they lost the game, the team performed better in the second half against the Juggernauts.
While talking about the first half against Kerala, Renedy Singh stated, “It was one of the best first halves we’ve played. Sunil Chhetri and I are combining well, and the team is gelling together.”
The club was dominant from the first whistle and capitalized on their chances to take an early lead. The Tuskers were caught by surprise with the fast start and struggled to contain their opponent’s attacking fluency. However, the second half brought a slight dip in tempo from Bengaluru with Kerala scoring two goals in quick succession.
Despite the adversity, Bengaluru defended resolutely for the remainder of the game and Chhetri’s late goal effectively sealed the outcome.
Ryan Williams showed his class
The goals once again highlighted Bengaluru’s strength in utilizing the wings. Both Sunil Chhetri and Ryan Williams played pivotal roles in the attack with Edgar Mendez leading the line in the centre. Talking about the game plan, Renedy Singh noted, “You can see it happening every match. The players and coaches have been working together to create chances from both the wings and the center. It’s all about teamwork.”
Ryan Williams played a key role in the game and set up Bengaluru’s opener with a lovely cross for Chhetri to glance home to give the team a 1-0 lead. Renedy Singh reserved special praise for Ryan Williams’ goal, which gave Bengaluru a 2-0 advantage just before half-time. He remarked, “One of the best goals. The way he cut in and scored was spectacular. He kept it simple, just like we discussed during the shooting drill before the match.”
Bengaluru FC fended off Kerala threats
After the Blasters made it 2-2 in the 67th minute, the game was there for Tuskers to win. However, the Blues showed great character and tenacity to ward off the Blasters’ chances from long range. While talking about what Kerala did wrong, Renedy Singh stated, “I don’t want to speak about the opponents, but I will say our boys handled the pressure well. The way we defended and stayed focused in the second half made the difference.”
While Renedy Singh celebrated the three points with the team, he emphasized that the Blues need to remain grounded with the games coming thick and fast. While this victory temporarily takes Bengaluru FC to the top of the league standings, solid teamwork and the enduring brilliance of veterans like Chhetri will be needed throughout the season.
The West Block Blues will undoubtedly look forward to more spirited performances as they hope to claim some silverware at the end of this campaign.
