ISL: Sunil Chhetri becomes the all-time highest goal scorer

Sunil Chhetri scored against Mohun Bagan, surpassing Bartholomew Ogbeche’s record.

Sunil Chhetri has inscribed his name into the Indian Super League (ISL) history books as the all-time highest goal scorer of the league, following his goal against Mohun Bagan Super Giant.The skipper converted the penalty in the 51st minute to score the third goal of the game, having also assisted the second goal for the Blues by teeing up Suresh Wangjam in the 20th minute.

The former Indian international has now tallied 64 goals in 158 appearances while representing Mumbai City FC and Bengaluru FC in the league, surpassing the record previously held by Bartholomew Ogbeche. The 40-year-old forward has now established himself as the all-time leading goal scorer for the Indian Football Team and as well as in India’s premier football league, further enriching his already radiant legacy.

Chhetri began his Indian Super League journey with Mumbai City FC in 2015, scoring 7 goals in 17 appearances for the club during his tenure. Following his move to Bengaluru FC in the 2017-18 season, the striker scored 57 league goals for the Blues and registered 12 assists. The veteran secured his first league title with the club in the 2018-19 season, making a crucial impact with a tally of 9 goals and 3 assists to help guide his team to victory.

Sunil Chhetri’s influence in the Indian Super League has been remarkable since making his debut, where he quickly established himself as a pivotal player despite joining the league later in his career. Already regarded as a legend of the game, Chhetri has reached another significant milestone in Indian football, enhancing his legacy as an icon in the country’s premier division.
