Sunil Chhetri overtook French legend Robert Pires and became the oldest goalscorer in ISL history. He scored against Sporting Club Delhi at Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday.

From 2014, when the league got the first wings, it was more of a football powerpack show, which offered you “extravaganza”-type things. Like some big marquee names in the teams, many European legacy proven superstars had left their mark here.

At the age of 37 years, 10 months and 24 days, Robbie Keane was one of the oldest goalscorers in the history of ISL. The Irish legend signed a valuable contract with ATK in the 2017/18 campaign. He scored six goals in his 9 matches, which he played wearing the Red and white Jersey. He scored against the Highlanders and sealed the win that made him an instant pick.

The La Masia graduate signed at the age of 34 for Bengaluru FC. He made 67 appearances for Bengaluru, scoring four goals and providing 14 forward passes that had the kick to go into the opponent’s net as assists. The Spaniard spent around four seasons with Bengaluru FC as he offered leadership in that midfield area. He won the first trophy of his career with Bengaluru, helping them in the 2018-19 season. His last goal was in a match between Bengaluru FC and Kerala Blasters in the 2020/21 season, where, at the age of 37 years 10 months, he managed to squeeze the goal into the net.

At the age of 38 years, 4 months and 4 days, Wes Brown, the former Manchester United defender, sealed his name very preciously in the list. In 2017, Kerala Blasters FC signed Wes Brown and became his final destination. He was not at his best when he played for the Yellow Army, but the experience meant so much. He scored against Northeast United FC in a 1-0 win that sealed the final nail in the coffin.

7. Bartholomew Ogbeche

Ogbeche was one of the most consistent veteran forwards who played in the Indian Super League. While playing for Hyderabad FC, his code at the age of 38 years and 96 days made him one of the oldest goal scorers in the league’s history. He is known for this positioning and finishing, and he also held the record as the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the Indian Super League, highlighting his remarkable longevity and goal-scoring ability even in the later stages of his career.

The Men of Steel signed Fransico Medina Luna, widely known as Piti, for the 2019/20 season. At the age of 38 years and 6 months, he managed to score against the Tuskers. Years of experience playing in La Liga with the likes of Real Zaragoza and Granada. However, he had a decent enough season in India, but his influence remained very special.

5. Tim Cahill

The goal against Delhi Dynamos at the age of 39 was not everyone’s cup of tea. The Australian Tim Cahill made a surprising move to Indian Football after joining Jamshedpur FC in 2018. A former Everton-born attacker scored twice in his 12 matches as a Jamshedpur FC player. The goal over a 2-1 win against Delhi Dynamos made him one of the oldest players to score.

Who doesn’t know French legend Robert Pires? He was the oldest player to score in ISL history before the match between Bengaluru FC and SC Delhi kicked off. As Sunil Chhetri overtook him. At the age of 41 years and 15 days, he scored his first-ever ISL goal in a 4-1 win over Delhi Dynamos in 2014.

The Gaurs decided to sign Arsenal Legend, as Pires did help FC Goa finish second in the league. His solo goal was the record for 12 years.

After scoring against SC Delhi at the age of 41 years and 196 days, he broke the record of the French Winger.

On Sunday at Bengaluru’s home stadium, he came as a substitute at 78th minute. Then after arrival, he scored with a long ranger, which gave a good win to Bengaluru FC. And now the record of being the oldest goalscorer of Indian Super League history is dedicated to Sunil Chhetri.
