Goalkeepers are a very vital part of football. Standing tall between the sticks, goalkeepers put in their blood and sweat to ensure that no ball passes them into the back of the net. Several goalkeepers have shown their class in the Indian Super League (ISL).
The thankless efforts a goalkeeper puts in, often go unnoticed as even the smallest of mistakes on their part puts them amid a pile of criticism. So today, we give the keepers their duly deserved appreciation, as we present the top five goalkeepers in the ISL with the most clean sheets.
5. Subrata Paul
Perhaps one of Indian football’s biggest legends, Subrata Paul was the star man of the national team in the 2010s. Across his ISL career, Paul represented several clubs like Mumbai City FC, Hyderabad FC, Jamshedpur FC, Mohun Bagan, and East Bengal.
During his playing days, the goal custodian nicknamed ‘Spiderman’ made 95 appearances across the years in the league. In this duration, he made a total of 30 clean sheets and was also awarded as the goalkeeper of the season with Jamshedpur FC in the 2017/18 season.
4. TP Rehnesh – 38 clean sheets
TP Rehenesh is another one of those players, who might very well be regarded as a legendary figure in the league, due to his sheer representation and accomplishments in the league.
Having started his league career with NorthEast United FC, Rehenesh grew into quite a known figure in between the sticks, going on to etch his name in the books of several other clubs like Jamshedpur FC, Mumbai City FC, and Kerala Blasters.
Rehnesh kept 38 clean sheets from 133 appearances and had a clean sheet percentage of 28.6%.
3. Vishal Kaith – 41 clean sheets
Now a superstar with serial winners Mohun Bagan SuperGiants, Vishal Kaith started his ISL career as a young inexperienced lad with Pune City FC in 2016. Over the years, Kaith became a regular starter with Chennaiyin, where he caught the eye of the masses with his splendid performances.
With coveted trophies like the ISL trophy, ISL Shield, Super Cup, and Durand Cup to his name, Kaith’s legacy in the league is now among one of the greatest goalkeepers in the ISL.
Kaith has 41 clean sheets to his name in 123 appearances. His clean sheet percentage is also amongst the highest, standing at 33.3%.
2. Amrinder Singh – 46 clean sheets
Indian football legend Amrinder Singh is the goalkeeper with the highest number of appearances ever in the ISL. Having started his ISL career with Atletico De Kolkata in 2016, Amrinder grew into a meteoric figure in the league, dropping staggering performances with every club he represented.
In 166 league appearances, Amrinder has kept a total of 46 clean sheets and is in a very tight race for the number one spot on this list.
1 . Gurpreet Singh Sandhu – 48 clean sheets
Indian football team captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu needs no introduction. The 6.4ft tall guardian has been at the forefront of Indian football since the start of his illustrious career. Having made his league entry with Bengaluru FC in the 2017-18 season, and has even since been the standout goalkeeper in the league.
Gurpreet also won the Indian Footballer of the Year award in 2020 and has one ISL trophy to his name. In 142 appearances in the league so far, Gurpreet has 48 clean sheets to his name and a staggering clean sheet percentage of 33.8%.
