ISL: Top five seasons with most hat-tricks
Only three hat-tricks were scored in the previous season of the ISL.
The Indian Super League (ISL) has always hosted players with sensational scoring ability. Over the past 10 editions of the league competition, fans have been witness to remarkable individual performances and hat-tricks.
Foreign players, in particular, have entertained the crowds with hat-tricks for their respective clubs and exceptionally talented Indian players have chipped in as well.
Scoring one goal in the ISL can be a difficult task, but scoring three in a single game takes incredible effort and technical ability. Scoring three goals and taking the match ball home is a dream for every footballer. Achieving this feat gives the player extra motivation and a lifelong memory to cherish.
Shifting the focus on the ISL, the 2023-24 season saw three hat-tricks which was relatively lower than other seasons. Here is a look back at which five editions had the most hat-tricks scored in the ISL:
2016: 3 hat-tricks
The 2016 ISL campaign saw only three hat-tricks scored. Diego Forlan scored a hat-trick for Mumbai City in a 5-0 win over Kerala Blasters.
Dudu Omagbemi scored a hat-trick for Chennaiyin FC in a 3-3 draw with NorthEast United and Marcelinho scored a hat-trick for Delhi Dynamos in a 5-1 thumping of FC Goa. Interestingly, three hat-tricks were scored in the 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2023-24 seasons as well.
2022-23: 4 hat-tricks
The 2022-23 season of the ISL was thoroughly entertaining and saw four hat-tricks. Dimitri Petratos scored the first one of the season in a 5-2 win over Kerala Blasters for ATK Mohun Bagan.
Abdenasser El Khayati, Bartholomew Ogbeche and Iker Guarrotxena also scored a hat-trick each for their respective clubs.
2021-22: 6 hat-tricks
A total of six hat-tricks were observed in the 2021-22 season of the Indian Super League. Greg Stewart, Deshorn Brown, Bartholomew Ogbeche, Kiyan Nassiri, Jorge Ortiz and Airam Cabrera scored hat-tricks for their respective outfits.
Kiyan Nassiri’s iconic second half hat-trick for ATK Mohun Bagan against East Bengal in the Kolkata Derby remains one of the most memorable moments in ISL’s history.
2017-18: 6 hat-tricks
The fourth season of the Indian Super League also saw six hat-tricks. Ferras Corominas scored two hat-tricks for FC Goa and eventually won the Golden Boot with 18 goals.
Marcelinho and Iain Hume also scored hat-tricks for FC Pune City and Kerala Blasters respectively. There were two Indian hat-trick scorers, Sunil Chhetri and Seiminlen Doungel for Bengaluru FC and NorthEast United.
2015: 8 hat-tricks
The 2015 season of the Indian Super League remains the edition with the most number of hat-tricks. It was the second season of the league and the expectations were high after a fruitful inaugural season the year before.
Steven Mendoza and Iain Hume scored two hat-tricks, while Sunil Chhetri, Dudu Omagbemi, Thongkhosiem Haokip and Reinaldo scored a hat-trick each.
