Here, we celebrate the top five French players who have left an indelible mark on the ISL.

5. Nicolas Anelka

Nicolas Anelka, a renowned figure in French football, brought his wealth of experience to the Indian Super League (ISL) when he signed with Mumbai City FC in 2014. Anelka, with stints at renowned European clubs like Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, and PSG, showcased his versatility by not only being a marquee player but also assuming the responsibilities of a player-manager in his second season.

With his commanding presence on the pitch and strategic brilliance off it, Mumbai City FC’s profile was greatly elevated. During his time in ISL, the Frenchman’s impact played a crucial role in establishing the high level of professionalism that became the norm in the league.

4. Florent Malouda

Another French footballing icon, Florent Malouda, joined Delhi Dynamos (now Odisha FC) in 2015. With a decorated career that includes a UEFA Champions League title with Chelsea, Malouda was a marquee signing for the Dynamos. His exceptional dribbling, vision, and leadership on the field helped Delhi Dynamos reach the semi-finals in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

The 44-year-old midfielder has a total of 32 appearances in the Indian Super League where he has won more than 50+ aerial duels and has three goals under his name with a passing accuracy of 82%. Malouda’s consistency and ability to perform in crucial matches endeared him to fans and solidified his status as one of the best foreign players in the league.

3. Gregory Arnolin

Gregory Arnolin, a robust central defender, played for FC Goa from 2014 to 2016. His commanding presence at the back and ability to read the game were crucial for Goa’s defense. Arnolin’s leadership and experience were vital in guiding the team to the semi-finals in the inaugural season and the final in 2015. His contributions on and off the pitch were pivotal in establishing FC Goa as one of the top teams in the league.

From the inaugural season, Gregory became the pillar of defense for FC Goa. The defender was endowed with good physical ability and strong game sense. For the Goan side, Gregory also presented a possible goal threat, particularly at set pieces. Using strong headers, he netted twice in the first season and once in the second.

2. Madih Talal

Madih Talal, the Algerian-born French footballer, has made his mark in the Indian Super League (ISL) with his versatile play and technical prowess. His ability to control the ball under pressure and execute precise passes makes him a valuable asset in the midfield.

His dribbling skills allow him to navigate through tight defenses, creating opportunities for his teammates. The last season was proof of how Talal’s ability to read the game and make intelligent runs off the ball often puts him in advantageous positions, allowing him to either set up goals or take shots himself.

One of Talal’s key strengths was his versatility. Primarily a central midfielder, he is equally comfortable playing in attacking or defensive roles. Last season with Punjab FC, the Frenchman scored six goals and assisted on 10 occasions out of his 22 appearances.
