ISL 2024-25: Rahul Bheke, Mehtab Singh highlight impenetrable Matchweek 5 Team of the Week defence

The Indian Super League (ISL) resumed action after the international break with its Gameweek 5. All teams except for Odisha FC were in action as we witnessed six teams secure motivating wins. The action began with Chennaiyin FC’s comeback win against NorthEast United in Guwahati followed by Bengaluru FC’s 1-0 triumph over Punjab FC in a top-of-the-table clash.

Mumbai City FC sidelined FC Goa and got their season up and running with their first win of the campaign. Mohun Bagan secured the bragging rights with yet another derby win before Kerala Blasters pulled off a comeback win against Mohammedan SC. The final game of the week witnessed Jamshedpur FC get their fourth win of the season.

On that note, let us take a look at Khel Now’s team of the week for Gameweek 5.

Formation: 4-4-2

GK – Albino Gomes (Jamshedpur FC)

Albino Gomes was once again a top performer for the Red Miners. He stood tall under the bar and helped his side secure a hard-fought win against Hyderabad FC. He didn’t keep a clean sheet but made seven crucial saves in the entire game to secure all three points for his team.

RB – Nikhil Poojary (Bengaluru FC)

The right-back has been one of the most consistent players for the Blues this season. He worked his socks off the right flank and made contributions on either end of the pitch. He made three clearances, one block and interception each while winning the majority of his duels.

CB – Rahul Bheke (Bengaluru FC)

Rahul Bheke put in a solid performance at the back in the game against Punjab FC. He kept the opposition editors at bay and handled the situation very well even after his side went down to ten men. Bheke made seven clearances and one block and interception each.

CB – Mehtab Singh (Mumbai City FC)

Mehtab Singh put together a brilliant performance and inspired his side to their first-ever win of the season. The Indian international recorded nine clearances and three blocks and won a majority of his duels, moreover, he maintained a passing accuracy of 87%.

LB – Naorem Roshan Singh (Bengaluru FC)

Roshan emerged as the player of the match in Bengaluru FC’s triumph over Punjab FC. He scored the winning goal for his side and was rock solid at the back. He made two clearances and completed 87% of his passes. Roshan also won 5/5 of his ground duels.

RM – Manvir Singh  (Mohun Bagan SG)

Manvir Singh put up a great display in the Kolkata Derby and helped his side secure the bragging rights and East Bengal. The 28-year-old displayed his excellent playmaking abilities and racked up an assist and created two big chances in the process.

CM – Rei Tachikawa (Jamshedpur FC)

The Japanese midfielder brought his A-game to the table and helped his side secure their fourth win of the season. Rei Tachikawa scored the opening goal for his side and was a livewire throughout the game. He executed two key passes and also created a big chance.

CM – Yoëll van Nieff (Mumbai City FC)

The Dutchman was the best-performing player for Mumbai City FC in their first win of the season. He was directly involved in both goals for his side as he racked up a goal and an assist. Van Nieff 37/46 passes and won 5/7 of his ground duels while making four interceptions and three tackles.

LM – Mohammad Sanan (Jamshedpur FC)

The young forward was a livewire for Jamshedpur FC on the left flank. He kept on troubling the opposition defenders with his pace and trickery and got an assist to his name in the process. Sanan completed the majority of his dribbles while executing two key passes and creating a big chance.

ST – Kwame Peprah (Kerala Blasters FC)

Kwame Peprah came off the bench and put the stage on fire for the Kerala Blasters. He brought his side back into the game with an equalizer and destroyed Mohammedan SC’s hopes. It was Peprah’s second ISL goal of the season.

ST – Wilmar Jordan Gil (Chennaiyin FC)

Wilmar Jordan Gil announced his arrival at Chennaiyin FC in style. The Colombian target man scored a brace against his former side and inspired the Marina Machans to a comeback win in Guwahati. Gil showed his aerial presence by winning 4/6 of his aerial duels.
