Jose Molina commented on the comparisons with foreign football.

Jose Molina witnessed his Mohun Bagan side show impressive resolve and efficiency to get a 2-0 win over NorthEast United in their own yard at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Guwahati on Sunday (9 December).

Despite being put under pressure by the Highlanders in the first half, the Mariners rode on brilliant goals from Manvir Singh and Liston Colaco to get a big win.

Ahead of the game, NorthEast United head coach Juan Pedro Benali had played some interesting mind games by comparing Mohun Bagan to the Real Madrid of Indian Football. He claimed that any team will have the highest form of motivation to face and beat the Mariners because of their star-studded squad and their being the defending ISL league shield champions.

Jose Molina made an interesting remark on Benali’s comments on the comparisons between his side to the La Liga heavyweights. After the win over NorthEast United, he stated: “I don’t know about that. You know our fitness coach (Sergio Garcia Toribio), his father said that NorthEast are like the Getafe of La India (ISL). If we are Real Madrid, then NorthEast United are Getafe. They are tough team to beat, really difficult to play against them.

“I don’t know if we are Real Madrid or even if NorthEast are Getafe. Mohun Bagan are Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United are NorthEast United. I know that Bernali tries to improve them to be better every day and they are achieving that as they are really difficult to play against. Maybe we meet them in the playoffs and no more at the moment,” Jose Molina added.

Mohun Bagan have gotten the better of NorthEast United both times in the ISL this season, beating them at home and away. This was the best form of revenge after Benali’s side had defeated the Mariners in the 2024 Durand Cup final to end Molina’s dreams of winning that coveted championship in his first season as Mohun Bagan’s coach.

The Spanish gaffer will hope his side can maintain their impressive run of form when they face off against Kerala Blasters in their next ISL match on 15 December.
