"We should not take this match lightly at all,” Coach Khalid Jamil focused ahead of India's clash against Singapore

India head coach Khalid Jamil urges focus and discipline as the Blue Tigers gear up for their away fixture against Singapore.
India’s head coach Khalid Jamil struck a note of seriousness and focus as he addressed the media ahead of Indian Football Team’s AFC Asian Cup Qualifier against Singapore, set to take place on Thursday. Jamil made it clear that his team is approaching this match with full intent.
“We should not take this match lightly at all,” Jamil said firmly. “We are playing an away game, and we need a positive result. The approach is simple — we all want to win.”
India’s recent experiences in the CAFA Nations Cup earlier this year have served as valuable learning opportunities. The tournament, where India competed against strong Central Asian sides like Iran and Oman, gave the squad a taste of tough competition and tactical adaptability.
“Talking about the last game — the CAFA Cup — that experience was useful for us. The players are professional; they understand the importance of this game. They are also prepared and know they have to take responsibility.”
“We have to be very careful”

The Indian squad has undergone a period of transition, with several fresh faces being integrated into the team setup. Jamil, known for his work with domestic Indian clubs like Aizawl FC, NorthEast United, and Jamshedpur FC, has placed strong emphasis on discipline, shape, and player responsibility since stepping into the national role. When asked about the tactical approach against Singapore, Jamil highlighted the need for flexibility.
“We need to mix things up depending on how the game goes, especially in attack,” he explained. “But as I said, this is an important match. We have to be very careful. Singapore have a good coach and quality players, so we cannot underestimate them.”
Under interim head coach Gavin Lee, Singapore have been in rebuilding mode, blending experience with youth. They recently secured wins in friendlies against Malaysia and Myanmar, driven by Ilhan Fandi’s form up front. Despite that, Jamil’s focus remained inward — on India’s structure, work rate, and mentality.

Chhetri is fit and available

The spotlight, as always, remains on Sunil Chhetri, who continues to lead the Indian frontline. When asked about the veteran striker’s availability, Jamil confirmed that the captain is fully fit.
“He is available, and he’s fit. Definitely, he will play for 90 minutes,” Jamil said with a smile, putting to rest any concerns over Chhetri’s workload or fitness.
As India continue their campaign of back-to-back away fixtures, Jamil was quick to acknowledge the role of supporters — both local and those traveling abroad. “It is our pleasure to be here,” he said warmly. “We hope the fans come and watch our game. As always, wherever we go, our Indian fans are there for us.”
Indian fans are expected to turn up in good numbers at the Singapore National Stadium, continuing a long tradition of strong overseas support.
Discipline, focus, and mindset
Players like Rahul Bheke and Anwar Ali are expected to play key roles. The focus will be on how quickly India can find rhythm, control possession, and transition effectively in attack. While much of the external attention remains on star names, Jamil’s message was clear — this is a collective effort.
“Every player knows their job. Everyone has to take responsibility,” he reiterated. “It’s about discipline, focus, and the right mindset.”
As the press conference wrapped up, Jamil’s tone remained calm but determined. There were no sweeping promises — just quiet confidence in preparation and belief in the squad’s work ethic.
“We know what this game means,” he said in closing. “We’re ready to give our best.”
