Lallianzuala Chhangte named Mumbai City FC captain ahead of ISL 2024-25

The Islanders have given the captain’s armband to the winger for the season.

Mumbai City FC have announced Lallianzuala Chhangte as their new senior squad captain ahead of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season. Since joining the Islanders in January 2022, Chhangte has consistently delivered standout performances, amassing 29 goals and 16 assists in 79 appearances. The prolific winger also finished as the top scorer for the Durand Cup 2022 with seven goals and three assists, leading his side to the finals on the same occasion.

In ISL 2023-24 under the watchful eyes of current coach Petr Kratky, he replicated his previous campaign’s success by contributing 16 goals (10 goals and 6 assists), becoming the first Indian player in ISL history to record over 15 goal contributions in back-to-back seasons.

A key player in the team’s triumphs, Lallianzuala Chhangte helped the Islanders clinch the ISL League Winners’ Shield in the 2022-23 season and played a decisive role in securing the ISL Cup in the following season with crucial goal contributions.

The winger honed his trade under Owen Coyle at Chennaiyin FC, rising to fame with the Marina Machans as he played a pivotal part in getting them to the ISL 2019-20 Finals. Chhangte eventually moved to Mumbai City when they came calling in 2022 and took a while to get up to speed under then-manager Des Buckingham but got his hands on a trophy eventually in the next season.

His appointment as captain will get an outstanding reception from the Islanders’ fans who have christened him as their ‘Mizo Flash’ after his tireless efforts to keep his side in contention for the highest honors of Indian football. To repay their gratitude, it is almost guaranteed that Chhangte will look to lead the team and those around him to continued success with his exemplary professionalism.
