Makoto Hasebe had been an influential figure both for Japan and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Makoto Hasebe, a stalwart of Japanese football and captain of the national team for a decade, has hung up his boots after a remarkable 22-year career. The 40-year-old made his final appearance for Eintracht Frankfurt in a 2-2 draw against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday, May 18th, 2024.

Hasebe’s leadership and dedication were instrumental in guiding the Samurai Blue through three consecutive World Cup appearances (2010, 2014, 2018). He earned the respect of fans and fellow players alike for his tireless work ethic and tactical intelligence.

Following the match, Hasebe expressed his gratitude to the supporters: “Without your help, I couldn’t have played this long.” He added, “I am proud of myself for continuing to do what needed to be done right until the very end. I grew as a human being through football and would like to continue that for the years to come.”

Hasebe’s career began in Japan with Urawa Reds in 2002. Initially known for his dribbling skills, he transformed himself into a versatile defender after moving to Germany’s VfL Wolfsburg in 2008. He achieved his sole Bundesliga title with Wolfsburg in the 2008-09 season.

After a stint with FC NĂŒrnberg, Hasebe joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 2014. There, he cemented his legacy, winning the German Cup in 2018 and the prestigious Europa League title in 2022. His unwavering commitment earned him a special contract, allowing him to transition into a coaching role at the club whenever he decided to retire.

Hasebe’s influence extended beyond his playing ability. His leadership and exceptional stamina, particularly in his later years as a deep-lying defender, garnered praise from football legends like Germany‘s World Cup winner Lothar MatthĂ€us.

While Makoto Hasebe’s playing days are over, his impact on Japanese football and Eintracht Frankfurt is undeniable. The club even finished the recently concluded Bundesliga season in sixth place, one position higher than their previous campaign.
