The latest FIFA rankings were released earlier this morning.

The Indian Football team has dropped down two places in the latest FIFA rankings marking the team’s lowest ranking in the recent past. Manolo Marquez’s have dropped down from 124 to the 126th position in the recently released FIFA rankings. The top spot is still retained by World Champions Argentina.

This is the fifth consecutive time when the Blue Tigers have dropped their rankings this year. The downfall began following India’s disastrous 2023 AFC Asian Cup campaign in Qatar where they lost 15 positions and came down to 117 from 102. And then a draw and defeat against Afghanistan in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers made things even worse as the team fell to the 121st position.

Following a draw against Kuwait and then a defeat to Qatar, the Blue Tigers dropped three more places and were 124 before achieving their lowest rank since 2017. It all happened due to India’s poor performance in the Intercontinental Cup wherein they were held to a 0-0 draw by Mauritius and then a 3-0 humiliating defeat to eventual champions Syria. India has lost 5.48 points and has gone from 1139 to 1133.52 points in the latest rankings.

What’s next for India

It hasn’t been an ideal year for the Indian national team. The back-to-back defeats against Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria respectively in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup hurt Indian big time and spoiled their dream of a fairy tale start to 2024. And the Blue Tigers haven’t been the same ever since having failed to win a single game in the calendar year.

From winning eight games in 2023 to winning none so far this year, the Blue Tigers seem to have lost track. They have undoubtedly hit rock bottom and it might get even worse from here on if necessary precautions are not taken. And the onus is now on Manolo Marquez and his team to turn the tables around and bring the glory days back to the national team.
