The Mariners are the reigning 2024-25 Indian Super League champions.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) in accordance with FIFA, has imposed a national ban on the registration of new players on Indian Super League (ISL) club Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

The player registration ban stems from the communication that the AIFF received from FIFA’s Director of the FIFA Judicial Bodies, the circular which Khel Now has access to.

The AIFF circular stated, “This circular is to notify all the Member Associations (MA) and stakeholders of the AIFF that a National Ban on the registration of new players has been imposed on the Club Mohun Bagan Super Giant (FIFA ID- 14AKC2C), a club registered within the Indian Football Association.”

Why are Mohun Bagan banned from registering new players?

While the circular does not explicitly state the reason behind the sanction, a potential reason is reported to be a failure to make the solidarity payments.

Solidarity payments are distributed to all clubs that trained the player between his 12th and 23rd birthdays at a proportional rate depending on how long the player was at each club.

Is this the first time an ISL club has been banned for Solidarity payments??

Mumbai City FC also received a similar suspension in October 2024. The reason for the imposition of the national ban was along the same lines for the Islanders.

A national ban could severely hinder any club’s ability to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season if not resolved quickly.

While Mohun Bagan are expected to resolve this technical issue quickly, the national ban is a reminder of the strict guidelines that Indian clubs operate within and how important it is to abide by those rules.
